What a cool beach find! These are natural intertidal #shellfishreefs formed by dense clumps of native mussels 🦪 Here are beaked mussels (Brachidontes erosus) near the low tide mark and little black mussels (Xenostrobus pulex) in the upper intertidal zone 🏖

Amazing work by our partner @ReviveOurGulf to restore #shellfishreefs in Aotearoa New Zealand!
Today was something special. This morning we joined the Ngāti Manuhiri whānau and deployed the last barge load of kūtai in the biggest experimental mussel bed yet for Te Moananui-ā-Toi / The Hauraki Gulf (150 tonnes!). #teauomorunga #shellfishrestoration #haurakigulf

Great little read by @kate_g_evans showcasing the diversity & potential of tropical oysters, as well as the excellent work being done by the team at the Darwin Aquaculture center, and PhD candidate @Marina_Annette1! @GriffithARI #shellfishreefs #molluscs
Tropical oysters have been overshadowed by their temperate cousins, but heat-loving species have enormous potential to feed people, provide economic growth, and rehabilitate tropical habitats. 🌴🦪 Written by @kate_g_evans @Marina_Annette1 ow.ly/afZh50L7zLA

#Masks on, please!😷 Next to overharvesting, #ClimateChange, and pollution, disease is a major component in the decline of #ShellfishReefs. Due to #shellfish losses, the available genetic pool is quite small which means less resilience towards #diseases. 📸@chesbayprogram

#DYK #ShellfishReefs are excellent at #carbon sequestration? 🤔 #Shellfish mineralize carbon in the water to create their shells! This simple act provides the Earth with a long-term sink for atmospheric carbon! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 📸@alice_howie36
