🛠️ Tech Titan Thursday #2: Michael Stonebraker Michael Stonebraker never stopped reinventing databases. Ingres in the ’70s, Postgres in the ’80s, Vertica, StreamBase, VoltDB, and more! He pushed the idea that new workloads deserve new architectures — column stores, stream processors, in-memory DBs. Each time the world shifted, he built a system to match.

Stonebraker’s ideas shaped the way I think about databases. His ideas (together with Abadi’s) convinced me that shared-nothing, specialized systems are the future. These ideas still drives how I build today.

He also wasn’t afraid to be contrarian. When MapReduce was the hottest thing out of Google, Stonebraker called it “a giant step backwards.” He encouraged software developers to think critically instead of just chasing hype.
A few of his most impactful papers: * The Case for Shared Nothing - a landmark argument for scale-out systems. * One Size Fits All: An Idea Whose Time Has Come and Gone - showed that specialized engines for analytics, streams, and scientific workloads could outperform general-purpose RDBMSs by orders of magnitude. * The End of an Architectural Era (It’s Time for a Complete Rewrite) (2007) - extended that critique to OLTP. Using H-Store, it demonstrated that legacy RDBMSs lagged badly in transactions too. The conclusion: retire 25-year-old code lines and start fresh with purpose-built engines. Innovation is about building new systems and challenging the status quo. Stonebraker made a career out of doing both.
