The world does not merely entertain; it catechizes. It teaches doctrine without calling it doctrine. It preaches sermons without pulpits. It evangelizes for the flesh while people sit there with popcorn in their hands. Romans 12:2 says, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Conformity often happens slowly. A Christian does not always wake up and decide to become worldly. He just keeps feeding on worldly things until his spiritual taste changes. Sin stops shocking him. Blasphemy becomes background noise. Immodesty becomes normal. Violence becomes amusing. Fornication becomes a storyline. Covetousness becomes aspiration. Pride becomes confidence. Witchcraft becomes fantasy. Mockery becomes humor. After a while, the Bible seems too sharp, preaching seems too serious, prayer seems too quiet, and holiness seems extreme. That is not entertainment staying neutral. That is discipleship. The Bible warns us that friendship with the world is spiritual adultery. “Know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God?” (James 4:4). That does not mean the Christian may never live in society, talk to lost people, understand culture, or enjoy any lawful earthly thing. It means the world system is hostile to God, and the Christian must not become fond of it. When entertainment makes you sympathize with what God condemns, laugh at what God hates, desire what God forbids, or mock what God calls holy, it is not harmless. It is training you. The heart follows what it feeds on. If you let the world preach to you long enough, do not be surprised when your affections start sounding like its converts. Chapter Three: The Eyes And Ears Must Be Guarded The Bible gives clear instruction about guarding what enters the heart through the eyes and ears.
