#Day2
The plenary ‘Towards a Himalayan Coalition for Sustainable Development’ held on Day 2 of WSDS 2026, focused on the urgent necessity of building a unified regional front to safeguard the fragile Hindu Kush Himalaya by transitioning from fragmented local efforts to a coordinated, mountain-sensitive framework that institutionalizes collective action across the region.
It was moderated by Mr Ranjit Barthakur,
@naturenomics, who highlighted the importance of the Himalayas. “To make the Third Pole thrive is not just an environmental necessity; it is a duty to the billions of people whose lives are inextricably linked to the land given to us by the snow."
Mr
@BhallaAjay26, Hon’ble Governor of Manipur, talked about the need to act urgently. “We can no longer treat mountain disasters as isolated episodes; the risk landscape is systemic, and our response must be equally multi-dimensional.”
Mr Pema Gyamtsho, Director General,
@icimod, Nepal, shared, “We are flying blind in the most critical ecosystem on Earth. The Hindu Kush Himalaya holds 54,000 glaciers, yet we only have 38 monitoring sites.”
Mr
@DurwoodZaelke, Founder and President, Institute for Governance & Sustainable Development (
@IGSD_DC), stated, “If decarbonization is our long-term map, then addressing non-CO₂ pollutants is our emergency brake.”
Ms Nameeta Prasad, Joint Secretary,
@moefcc, added, “The question before us is not whether we need a coalition, but whether we can afford to delay one any longer.” Mr Mingma Tempa Sherpa, Commissioner cum Secretary, Planning and Development Department, Government of Sikkim, highlighted, “The Himalayas are far more than a mountain range; they are a living ecological infrastructure sustaining nearly two billion people."
Mr Ram Kumar S, Secretary, Planning, Government of Meghalaya, emphasised, “Agencies must stop viewing communities as the recipients of change and start viewing them as the architects of it.” Dr Dipankar Saharia, Senior Director, TERI, shared, “We must move beyond being merely project-oriented. By establishing the Centre for Himalayan Studies, we are building a vital bridge between institutional partnership and the actual execution of our collective vision for the region."
Ms
@sonalighoshdws, Director,
@kaziranga_, Assam, concluded, “When our water bodies dry up and are choked by invasive species, the indicators are clear. We are witnessing a systemic shift that no single nation can solve alone. We need a global partnership to combat the crisis at our doorstep.”
