Maybe reach out to manufactures of the equipment you need and ask for a donation of equipment. Great PR for them - helping Veterans get back on their feet.
Here's a list of companies that do this.
Manufacturers & Companies with Equipment Support/Discounts Veteran History These often provide discounts (10% military) or donate tools/equipment through partnerships, foundations, or local dealer programs. Useful for purchasing or supplementing grants.
The Toro Company — Landscape-specific equipment (mowers, trimmers, snow equipment). Has an Equipment Donation Program (mainly nonprofits/municipalities) and "American Hero" military discount program. Underwrites veteran lawn service programs like GreenCare for Troops. Strong history in veteran/landscaping support. Check local dealers for promos
DEWALT (Stanley Black & Decker) — Power tools ideal for handyman/landscaping. "Grow the Trades" initiative includes tool donations, grants, and scholarships (focuses on veterans/trades training). $60M commitment by 2030; has awarded millions in tools/grants. Military discounts available via retailers.
STIHL, Husqvarna, John Deere, ECHO — Outdoor power equipment (chainsaws, mowers, trimmers) perfect for landscaping. All offer military/first responder discounts (10% typical) and have histories of donating equipment to veteran groups (e.g., STIHL to Team Rubicon/Wounded Warrior projects; Toro/John Deere community giving). Contact local dealers for veteran programs or bulk startup deals.
Home Depot & Lowe’s — 10% military/veteran discount on tools/equipment (register via their sites). Home Depot Foundation has invested $650M in veteran causes (housing/repairs, but supports trades via Path to Pro). Local stores or foundations sometimes partner for veteran business tool support. Strong veteran hiring and supplier.
Government & Surplus Programs (Low/No-Cost Equipment)
DOD/GSA Surplus Property Program (via SBA/DLA): Veteran-owned small businesses can access excess military equipment/vehicles/tools at low or no cost through state agencies or SBA set-asides. WVFV often assists.
Eligibility: SBA-certified veteran/small business.
How: Contact your local SBA Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC)
Additional strong options for cash grants usable for equipment: Warrior Rising (startup grants in-kind "Business Shower" support;
warriorrising.org), Hiring Our Heroes Small Business Grant ($10k–$25k), and Second Service Foundation Military Entrepreneur Challenge ($4k–$15k). These have helped hundreds of veteran businesses buy tools/gear.warriorrising.org 1
Recommendations: Start with WVFV (most direct equipment fit) and REAch/Tools4Troops if eligible. Combine with manufacturer discounts for the rest. Your veteran friend should verify VA benefits (e.g., Veteran Readiness & Employment may fund equipment for self-employment plans) and reach out to a local VBOC for free counseling. Many require proof of veteran status and a solid business plan.
Can't hurt to ask.
