ALT GuuDz describes the beginning of Baby Steps as a simple but unusual setup. The player takes control of Nate, a character who suddenly finds himself in a large, open natural environment with no clear direction or guidance.
What stands out immediately, GuuDz explains, is the movement system. Instead of walking normally, each step has to be controlled manually, making basic movement slow, awkward, and often frustrating. Early on, most of the experience is spent learning how to balance, step forward, and avoid falling over terrain like rocks and hills.
As GuuDz puts it, the first part of the game focuses less on story and more on adapting to this unfamiliar control scheme. There are no traditional objectives or markers—progress is measured by how far Nate can move without falling. Over time, small improvements in movement begin to feel meaningful.
