There’s a version of the game that only shows up when you slow it down. Not rushed. Not reactive. Intentional. #DrivenBasketball #BeBetterBeDifferent

Great read from @rustindodd on Dusty May working w/ teaching expert He has "created a culture that is 1 part Ted Lasso, 1 part HS teacher: always curious, never judgmental But it also represents a larger idea: the benefits of coaching like a teacher." nytimes.com/athletic/7167858…

“We have a sign in our locker room that says April habits. Since this group got together this summer, we've been trying to develop championship habits." Championship habits start long before championship moments. The postseason is where standards show up and excuses run out.

📺 Best Nuggets From Coaching Clinics This one comes from a FIBA clinic by Brett Brown — the Cutthroat Defense Drill. It’s one of the first clinics I ever watched, and I still use it 12 years later. What makes it so good isn’t just the drill — it’s how he builds it up. Layer by layer, coverage by coverage, concept by concept. That’s the key. The drill is a teaching tool, not just a segment to get reps. I’ve added constraints over the years — communication rules, personnel, rebounding consequences — but the structure stays the same. Build it. Then stress it. Don’t skip steps. Full Link: youtu.be/RmeRyIL3YAI?si=X8W_…

Help defense is a game of inches. Six inches late → foul or layup. Six inches early → charges, wall ups, steals... Great defenders aren’t flying in late. They’re already in position. Full breakdown on How to Make Plays in Help: youtu.be/xgXy2W6PLYM

Basketball coaches: give this a read.
One of the biggest mistakes coaches make.... Trying to correct an error by giving a solution. In this study, they had two groups. Group 1: Given a solution to fix their error. Group 2: Told to exaggerate their error. Then did a swing with no instruction. Group 2 had better results and a better retention rate. Why? As a coach we want to give the solution because: 1. They feel helpful and they genuine think they're helping. 2. It seems like the fastest way to get an effect. However the brain doesn't work that way. We learn best by working to solve the problem. So by leaning into an error the athlete experiences the incorrect technique to a more exaggerated degree. Then they are able to self correct. In other words: they felt the incorrect technique and self-regulated into the correct technique. This is more effective because they worked to come up with solution. I use this example often but if I give you the asnwer to a math problem -- you may be able to tell me that specific math problem answer but it doesn't make you better at math! You won't be any better off with another problem. If I make you solve it-- you get better at math and will be better off if I give you a problem you've never seen before. And that is how we come to the crux of learning -- giving an environment that allows the athlete to solve a problem, struggle...fail, and self-regulate to find the solution. How can you apply this to training?

Coaches who obsess with: - Details - Innovation - Simplicity - Connection - Learning Are GUARANTEED to succeed. Conversely, coaches who obsess with: - Outcomes - Appearance Will ALWAYS have an excuse, be forced to make a change, or quit. PROCESS > RESULTS
