President Trump surprised even his own health officials when he announced a pledge to end HIV by 2030 in his 2019 State of the Union address. It wasn't the most natural sell. A top health official told Trump in an Oval Office meeting "these are gay Black men in the South, and these are transgender women" — in other words "100 percent not likely your constituents" — but the president was all in. Now, with four years to go, progress has not only stalled — but backslid. New from me @AliceOllstein in the @POLITICOMag relaunch on how the HIV pledge happened — and then fell apart. politico.com/news/magazine/2…

More news - House GOP leaders think they can pass on suspension what they believe will be small Senate tweaks to the housing bill. Then send to Trump in the next few weeks. That would end a long standoff over what was supposed to be a major affordability win for Trump Republicans months ago.
News: Thune says his hope is to pass an updated housing bill and send it back to the House before the Senate's July 4 recess: "That's my hope, yeah, but then my hopes often get dashed around here, as you know, but I actually think we're driving toward what I hope is the final solution on the housing issue."

THREAD: For nearly five months, @adamwren and I dove into hundreds of screenshots, financial records and documents outlining a web of coordinated interests that sought to avoid a return to the “maximum pressure” that defined the first Trump administration’s Venezuela policy.

NEW from me and @adamwren: A web of oil interests, a fallen congressmember, a special envoy and a fleet of social-media influencers tried to pull the Trump administration toward a more accommodating posture on Venezuela. It almost worked.

It was a blowout jobs number. The labor market looks like it's humming. And as was the case for President Biden, it hasn't yielded any political upside for the incumbent. politico.com/news/2026/06/05…
