Captured by #Sentinel3 on 27 June in the #BalticSea, the bloom is likely caused by cyanobacteria, a seasonal occurrence in the region exacerbated by nutrient run off from land that can impact both human and environmental health 🛰️

Ilmatieteen laitos on mukana GIANT-projektissa, jossa tutkitaan sisällä ja ulkona olevien ilmansaastelähteiden vaikutusta sisäilman laatuun. Ilmatieteen laitos osallistuu hankkeessa muun muassa pienhiukkasten mittauksiin.

Ilmatieteen laitoksen johtamassa tutkimuksessa selvitettiin haihtuvien orgaanisten yhdisteiden ja pienhiukkasten orgaanisen materiaalin ominaisuuksia ja alkuperää. Tuloksien avulla selvitettiin suurimmat päästölähteet liikenneympäristössä.

Suomen ilmanlaatumittaukset ovat jäljitettäviä SI-yksikköihin, joita ovat mm. metri, kilogramma ja mooli. Kansainvälisessä paino- ja mittatoimistossa (BIPM), Pariisi, säilytetään vanhaa kg-standardikappaletta (kuvassa replika), mutta nykyään SI-yksiköt johdetaan luonnonvakioista.

Laajensimme ilmanlaatupalvelua ottamalla seurantaan mustan hiilen. Musta hiili eli noki on terveydelle haitallinen ilmansaaste. Lisäksi se kiihdyttää ilmastonmuutosta.
