In response to comments. I believe that those of us who have been financially successful, through a (varying) mix of effort and chance owe a lot to the society in which they have grown and lived. (A view I share, with all due respect, with Warren Buffett, Bill Gates and their Giving Pledge initiative; they are not known to be extreme leftists) For the most part, the French tax system is very progressive, and the rich pay high taxes. But I believe that this is not the case today for many of the very rich. I believe that this is wrong, and politically explosive, especially so in an environment in which the state must reduce its spending. I have examined various options to achieve that goal. I have concluded that, although far from perfect, a Zucman-like tax seems like the least bad way to do so (although, as I have discussed with Gabriel Zucman and stated elsewhere, I believe 1% is more realistic than 2%). This is why I have endorsed it.

At the end of the day we're a species driven by narratives - perception is reality - and there are plenty of historical examples (South Africa, Rhodesia, Serbia, etc.) where reputational collapse preceded, and drove, actual collapse. The distance from "pariah state" to "former state" is shorter than most realize, and even if Israel avoids that fate, pariah status is deeply corrosive from within - you end up "winning" yourself into a kind of toxic prison.
