An amazing #WalkToSchoolDay yesterday with Ben Sheppard Elementary, celebrating a 20 year partnership with @MDCPS to bring street safety education, information, and inspiration to the children of Miami-Dade County and its municipalities.
THANK YOU!
UM WalkSafe Program hosted its 20th Anniversary Walk to School Day event at Ben Sheppard Elementary School. TPO Deputy Director of Administration, Zainab Salim, provided an inspirational message promoting safe & active walking practices.

The images show students holding signs and certificates, walking together outdoors, and participating in safety-themed activities. Teachers, staff, and community partners, including Miami-Dade T.P.O. staff, law enforcement and a sports mascot, join the celebration. The school entrance is decorated with balloons, banners, and a rainbow appears over the building, highlighting the festive atmosphere promoting safe and active travel to school.

ICYMI: If you are in Miami's #CoconutGrove, this is a must-read!
The results of our community surveys and pop-up events are now published in this 42-page report - and interactive map - for safer streets in the Center and West Grove.

Right turns on red encourage drivers to roll through when they should stop.
RTORs encourage drivers to look left...only.
RTORs break the rule that RED = 🛑
RTORs make it easy for🚶♀️🚲🛴🚶 to get hurt crossing legally.
RTORs, for safety’s sake, shouldn’t exist anymore.
This year, the @iWalkSafe Program reached over 73,000 children and adults across Miami-Dade.

Happy National Child’s Day! Today recognizes that every child has the opportunity to pursue the limits of their talents and ambitions. Active transportation is important for children, and we encourage everyone to support it! @themiamiproject@univmiami#WalkSafe#BikeSafe

Sadly, 40 years of broken promises by many (not the funders of our grant, but others) also meant that in the year 2024, there are still kids forced to walk on a dirt path to school.
On @RubyBridges Walk to School Day, no less.
Unacceptable.
The utterly superfluous (there's no connecting lane to it) dedicated right turn lane was also closed off, thus providing a PROPER setback from the sidewalk for families from 37th Ave. traffic.
Meanwhile, at @FrancesTuckerES, our sister program, @iWalkSafe, was busy working with @KERR_MPD's team to calm traffic.
This school has more #walktoschool participants, and closing down Williams Ave eliminated the right turn on red dangers at the school's present crosswalk.
The writing is on the wall in bright red fluorescent neon:
Protected bike lanes linking neighborhood streets with schools reduce auto congestion: coconutgrovespotlight.com/20…
Plus, bikes get kids excited to go to school AND facilitates their health. #BikeGrove2024
It's National Injury Prevention Day.
Let's start by encouraging engineers to eliminate right turns on red AND any walk signal that conflicts with green light.
Make traffic signals unambiguous for the safety of kids and families. #BeInjuryFree@americawalks@injuryfreekids
The big community Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day in @CoconutGroveBID is ON!
The post-hurricane rescheduling has allowed us to recognize the @RubyBridges Foundation this year as part of the community efforts to make walking and cycling to school safer for kids and families.
