The importance of purposeful activity in prisons to both individual & community, mustn’t be underestimated or thought of as a “perk”. It’s vital to reduce offending on release. Sport/gym identified as one such activities. We aim to give that opportunity to as many as possible!
Today, we have published a key findings paper that digs deeper into the ongoing failings in purposeful activity. Read the paper: hmiprisons.justiceinspectora… And our media release: hmiprisons.justiceinspectora…

Great to see this holistic approach to nourishment. Having worked @HmpSend for some time, I know how much staff work to support & empower the women, to live a crime-free life on release. Prison is punishment, but also preventing possible future offending bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1m0…

Sport can do so much more than just build physical health. Thanks @PrisonStorm for the shout out!
#TheBoatRace is a good moment to remember that the #powerofsport is often superior approach to rehabilitation than banging people up for 23 hours a day in #prisons, with nothing to do. Award winning initiatives such as #BoatsNotBars exemplify what is possible. @imogenwalsh

Huge thanks to @LondonSport @ITVX @amberahmad55 for making this piece about Boats not Bars. With more support we hope to reach more participants, and help people stay away from crime on release, helping not just them, but the communities around them. itv.com/watch/news/life-afte…

Thanks @BBCRadioLondon and @EddieNestorMBE for giving me the chance to chat about Boats not Bars. The more we tackle reoffending rates, the better the lives all Londoners will be.
FRBC Prisons Manager @imogenwalsh was on the @EddieNestorMBE Show yesterday on @BBCRadioLondon discussing #BoatsNotBars’ nomination for the @LondonSport Award. To hear Imogen & @anilmanjiuk talk about the #LondonSportAwards 🎧 1:37- 1:47: bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0h715… #LetsMoveLondon

Re-watching “Trading Places” after many years… it’s both totally outdated and racist, but (sadly) totally on point and current at the same time.

How anyone with even the slightest awareness of the figures - produced by the MoJ and the government no less, can say this is astounding. To say it makes me angry reading this is an understatement…
Replying to @SuellaBraverman
Prison works. It is a deterrent, it takes criminals off our streets and is justice for their victims. This bill will severely undermine confidence in our criminal justice system. The solution to this problem is to build more prisons, not let criminals off the hook. 3/3

Interesting evening hearing the recommendations of the centreforsocialjustice.org.u… report at @APPG_SPACJS tonight - access to sport isn’t enough, the intentionality with which it’s delivered is vital to conveying positive effects on anti-social behaviour and crime

Thank you @UKSportsInst for inviting me to speak about sport and its role in society - so encouraging that even at the elite level, practitioners are looking at how sport can be used for social good #powerofsport

Delighted that Boats not Bars won the Innovation category at the Sports Business Awards on Friday - the more we value such projects, the more likely we can make prison a one-off punishment instead of the start of a revolving door pattern #powerofsport

“Pregnant women in English prisons are seven times more likely to suffer a stillbirth than those in the general population”. Whatever you think about prisons being for punishment vs. punishment AND rehabilitation, this stat has to appall and trigger Qs. theguardian.com/society/2023…

Thought this was an interesting read - on the need to take risks and fail in childhood, to be able to having coping strategies in adulthood.
We've got a youth mental health epidemic. Part of the reason? Without being aware of it, adults are training kids to have hypersensitive threat alarms, without the tools or resources to handle any sort of challenge. The consequences are dire. thegrowtheq.com/stop-hoverin…
