The web is disappearing 🕳️ According to a Pew Research Center report, 26% of pages from 2013-2023 are no longer accessible. But that’s not the whole story. In a new study published in Internet Archive's book, VANISHING CULTURE, data scientists working with the Wayback Machine have found: 16% have been restored through the Wayback Machine. 56% are preserved before they disappear. Preservation is the remedy for cultural loss. 📚 Read VANISHING CULTURE free from the Internet Archive 📖 Download & read: archive.org/details/vanishin… 🛒 Purchase in print: betterworldbooks.com/product… #VanishingCulture #DigitalMemory #InternetArchive #BookTwitter

Today on International Archives Day (9 June), we recognize how institutions like the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) safeguard the nation’s documentary history, ensuring accountability, preserving memory, and maintaining access to records across generations. Just as the NARA preserves a nation’s record, the Wayback Machine preserves the history of its web presence. 🕰️ 💾 Explore decades of #webhistory with the #WaybackMachine: web.archive.org @internetarchive @WaybackMachine #InternationalArchivesDay #DigitalMemory

🧵1/3 What do we lose when family & community cookbooks disappear? 🍲📚 Katie Livingston argues that cookbooks are more than collections of recipes. They preserve family histories, local traditions, and the everyday experiences that often go undocumented elsewhere. Read her essay "Preserving Cookbooks," part of VANISHING CULTURE from the #InternetArchive. 🔗 archive.org/details/vanishin…

2/3 From margin notes and recipe revisions to newspaper clippings tucked between pages, cookbooks reveal how people adapted, shared, and passed on knowledge over time. They capture forms of labor and creativity that are often overlooked in traditional historical records.

3/3 Livingston shows how community cookbooks can illuminate the histories of families, neighborhoods, and entire regions. Preserving them helps ensure that these stories, traditions, and cultural connections remain accessible for future generations. 📖 Read Vanishing Culture for free or 🛒 purchase in print: archive.org/details/vanishin… #VanishingCulture #GameHistory #DigitalPreservation #InternetArchive

🧵1️⃣/2️⃣ The Internet Archive helped solve a 100-year-old conservation mystery. Researchers discovered why some bowhead whale populations are recovering today from centuries of commercial whaling by using centuries-old Arctic whaling logbooks digitized by the New Bedford Whaling Museum and made accessible through the Internet Archive. These logbooks remind us that preserved records don’t just document history: they unlock it for use today & tomorrow. 🔓 Learn more: theconversation.com/centurie…

2️⃣/2️⃣ By reconstructing historical whaling routes, scientists identified Arctic sea ice refuges where bowhead whales were protected from industrial hunting for decades. Those safe havens reduced the impact of whaling on some populations and may explain why they are rebounding today. 🐋 @ConversationUS @InternetArchive #DigitalPreservation #OpenAccess #Conservation #Whales #MarineScience #Biodiversity #History #Archives
