This is deservedly viral and a great lecture, but I'm afraid it doesn't help much if you are dealing with religious or political bigotry that defies any logic!

Launch of the @WHO World Health Organization guideline on policies and interventions to create healthy #school food environments - 27 January 2026 13:00 – 14:00 CET This WHO guideline offers Member States evidence-based recommendations and implementation considerations on policies and interventions to improve school #food environments. It covers three key areas: -food provision in schools; -nutrition standards or rules for foods and beverages served or sold at school; -nudging interventions that modify the school food environment to promote healthier choices. The recommendations aim to increase the availability, purchase and consumption of foods and beverages that contribute to a healthy #diet, while reducing the presence and consumption of those that do not. The guideline emphasizes that foods and beverages provided, served, sold or consumed at schools should be safe and support healthy diets, in line with children’s rights and national public health goals. Children spend a large share of their day in school, making it a critical setting for shaping lifelong dietary habits and reducing health and #nutrition inequities. Creating healthier school food environments should be a part of broader efforts to improve population diets through food system transformation and the creation of healthy food environments for all, including through marketing restrictions, fiscal policies to promote healthy diets and nutrition labelling policies. Sitting isn't just inactivity, for older adults, it can mean pain relief, a social opportunity, or a reward. Future efforts must move beyond just telling people to "sit less." We need inclusive recruitment, a focus on outcomes older adults truly value (like reduced pain and improved mood), and interventions that align with their daily lives and preferences. It's about adding life to years, not just minutes to the day. New research shows interventions CAN reduce sedentary behavior in older adults, but the key lies in the design. Mixed-methods review of 56 studies found that while interventions cut sitting time by an average of 27.5 min/day, success depends heavily on method. Programs using 11 or more behavior change techniques (like goal setting & self-monitoring) were far more effective. However, a major gap exists between self-reported success (-83 min/day) and device-measured results (-11 min/day), highlighting a perception vs. reality challenge in measurement. ijbnpa.biomedcentral.com/art…

Leaders from across the world at the Eightieth United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) have adopted the political declaration to combat noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health challenges through a fully integrated approach. This is the outcome of the intergovernmental negotiations in advance of and considered by the fourth high-level meeting of the #UNGA on the prevention and control of NCDs and the promotion of mental health and well-being, held on 25 September 2025. Titled "Equity and integration: transforming lives and livelihoods through leadership and action on noncommunicable diseases and the promotion of mental health and well-being", the political declaration is the first such declaration addressing NCDs and #mentalhealth together, and marks a unique opportunity to accelerate global progress with a set of specific global targets for 2030. This step is expected to usher in a new era in addressing some of the world’s most pressing health challenges – affecting people of all ages and income levels across the globe. Today’s leading causes of death – #NCDs – claim 18 million lives prematurely each year, while mental health conditions affect over a billion people globally. NCDs are often driven by preventable risk factors such as unhealthy diets, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, and #airpollution – many of which also negatively impact mental health. Both NCDs and mental health conditions are increasing in every country, affecting every community. That makes them urgent issues not only for public #health, but also for productivity and sustainable economic growth. who.int/news/item/16-12-2025…

As the holidays near, let’s reflect on 2025’s biggest public health story. The EU is failing. This year, it became the continent with the highest smoking rates (WHO). Its prohibitionist approach isn’t working, and urgent action is needed to hit 2040 smoke-free targets. In comparison, Sweden is already close to becoming smoke-free. They’re hitting the target years early by embracing harm reduction. Still Brussels keeps pushing policies that don’t work like massive tax hikes on safer alternatives or EU-wide bans. It’s time for the EU to follow Sweden’s lead and not double down on failure. Our report “Missing the Target” is a stark reminder of what is at stake: smokefreesweden.org/wp-conte…

Yes, recent data shows 2023-2024 as hottest years on record, 2025 tracking very warm—likely warmest period in 125,000 years. CO2 at ~430 ppm, highest in millions of years. Scientists warn of severe risks to civilization from abrupt changes, but survival possible with urgent fossil fuel cuts and adaptation. Sources: NASA, NOAA, IPCC.
