For years, Puerto Ricans in Humboldt Park, my neighbors, have organized to end the unacceptable colonial status of Puerto Rico. We are clear that any legislation that attempts to address the future of the archipelago by reinforcing colonialism betrays Puerto Ricans and every person committed to ending the long-standing imperialism of the United States. As we approach July 4th, we must affirm the fundamental freedom that was sought, but has been continuously denied to so many: No kings, NO COLONIES.
A status bill that includes colonialism as an option is not decolonization. @RepAOC & I oppose the Resident Commissioner's legislation & will keep fighting for real self-determination for Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico's colonial status is a stain on our history. It must end.

🇵🇷 Roots, Resistance & Resilience: The Puerto Rican community of Chicago has become one of the most powerful examples of cultural preservation and political self-determination in this country. Settling in Humboldt Park on Division Street (La División) after being displaced through gentrification, Puerto Ricans faced deep and ongoing struggles for dignity. What are often called "riots" in 1966 and 1977 were something more – a community rising up against decades of police brutality, housing discrimination, economic exclusion, and a city that kept pushing them to the margins. Lives were lost. Hundreds more were injured, arrested, and criminalized. But they did not break. Remembering this history isn't about pain, it's about power. It's about recognizing that the same spirit that survived displacement and systemic neglect is the spirit that built community, cultural centers, and a neighborhood that displays the flag with pride. We don't forget where we came from. We carry it forward. Somos Boricua. Somos resistencia. Somos futuro. ✊🏽 #HumboldtPark #ResistanceAndResilience #ChicagoHistory

Happy Pride Month! 🌈💛 This month and every month we stand loud and proud with our LGBTQIA family in Humboldt Park, across Puerto Rico, and beyond. 💜 We are so excited to march this season under the beautiful theme "Celebrando Orgullo Boricua: Puerto Rican Gay Pride, Aquí y Allá" at the Puerto Rican People's Day Parade, honoring the intersecting identities that make our community so vibrant and strong. 🌺🇵🇷 We're also deeply honored to have been chosen as the "Out Front" community group for the 2026 Chicago Pride Parade, leading the procession as a proud reflection of who we are and what we stand for. 🏳️‍🌈 Our support for the LGBTQIA community goes beyond celebrations. Through our health initiative Vida/SIDA, El Rescate transitional living program for youth, and the newest addition to our programs, @WavesAheadPR, which provides mental health and other services to seniors in Puerto Rico, we're committed to showing up with real resources and real love. 💙 To our community: You deserve to be celebrated every single day. ¡Orgullo Boricua, Orgullo Nuestro! 🇵🇷✨#ChicagoPride #HappyPrideMonth #FreetobeProud #HumboldtPark #OrgulloBoricua
