No10 indicating last night that Starmer is will let the NEC allow Burnham to run in Makerfield. Why? A) To avoid a factional leadership contest that would almost certainly arise from any attempt to block Burnham and…

B) See below, data from the BBC showing the swing from Lab to Ref in Makerfield since GE24 to LE26. Burnham’s personal standing in Manchester can’t be understated, but it is going to be a very tough by-election to win A genuine roll of the dice for both Starmer and Burnham

Excellent piece from @jessicaelgot Have Burnham and Streeting made a ‘granita’ pact?
Streeting has seen which way the wind is blowing and it is blowing towards Greater Manchester My analysis theguardian.com/politics/202…

Well well well, Makersfield or Breakersfield for Burnham then…
Senior Labour party figures, including cabinet ministers, tell me the NEC is not expected to block Andy Burnham's selection a second time. Several members of the 10-person committee that makes the decision have confirmed to us tonight they would give him the green light. And sources close to Starmer believe he will no longer be in a position to block Burnham’s return - even if it means a leadership contest before next general election - as MPs from across party would be furious.

A mad day in Westminster, my thoughts as the day progressed: - 11am, Streeting hasn’t resigned, everything suggested he would and expected him to have by now - 1pm, Streeting resigns, but doesn’t challenge Starmer, does he have the numbers in the PLP to do so?

- Starmer knows Burnham can get PLP numbers to challenge, knows Lab membership prefer him, so IF Burnham wins by-election, Starmer faced with a drawn out leadership election he will almost certainly lose, or agreeing to a timetable for Burnham to take over in a less divisive way

- Final thought: what if Starmer gets NEC to block Burnham from standing? He’s done it once, he could do again… - If he does? Labour Civil War, that could tear the party apart - Time will tell on all of this, but blimey, what a day…
