School's almost out. How did your kid do, really? Yesterday, a fellow mom approached me, puzzled. Kid has great grades, does well practicing, yet slipped on standardized scores. How? This important NYT piece by @ariel_kalil & Derek Rury explains why it's so hard to know:
Pleased to have an Op-Ed in today's NYT. It’s Becoming Impossible to Know How Your Kid Is Doing in School nytimes.com/2026/05/26/opini… via @NYTOpinion

I have spent my career running field experiments. With my new book coming out I have decided to run a few on all of you! Here is the first one! I am giving away a bundle: 1 signed copy of my new book Experimental Economics: Theory and Practice 1 free t-shirt of the book. But, there is a Dictator Game twist. In the comments please tag a friend. Before you know if you win, tell me your allocation: keep both, give one, or give it all away. If you are randomly selected, I'm holding you to what you said. Your choice is already public, and your friend can see it right now. Your chances of winning do not depend on your allocation. I will randomly select a winner this Saturday at midnight EST and report back. Extra credit giveaway: if the random person chosen also retweeted this message, then I will also send a signed copy of The Voltage Effect to both them and their partner. And, yes, your partner can sign up too to double your chances! Good luck!

Such information consumption patterns may lead parents to invest less time & resources in their child’s academic performance, & thus negatively impact students’ educational outcomes. The team will study if making standardized test scores easier to access impacts outcomes.

At @uclaanderson, we’re innovating and breaking down the walls of the ivory tower with our new capstone courses. In my case, FEiSty = Field Experiments in Strategy. My students are running #FieldExperiments with organizations, getting hands-on experience and contacts 🌎💼

And that’s where @netflix comes in. We had a fantastic talk from Simon Ejdemyr, who gave us a behind-the-scenes look at how experimentation drives decisions at #Netflix. We discussed sequential and adaptive testing, swim lane designs (new fav), experimentation #strategy & more🚀

Curious what it is we’re really doing in the #BusinessSchool classroom? I often get that question. Yesterday, in my #FEiSty course, I had my students… watch Netflix. 🎬😲 But before you jump to conclusions, hear me out! 👇

✨ James Robinson just won the Nobel Prize in Economics! 🎉✨ But honestly… Nico, my 5-year-old, saw it coming! 😂 Intensely taking notes in James’ lecture. James even gave Nico feedback and (I think it was James) commended him for his good notation. Watch for more.

There’s a new tool that generates a podcast conversation with two hosts based on sources you feed it. Google’s NotebookLM is in beta phase, and it has already hooked me for class prep. I’ve been giving it my slides before class to see what it makes of the material.

The Audio Overview shifts me into a different learning style, which is refreshing. Even where it goes a bit astray, it has offered me new perspectives to consider.

It’s likely even picking up on the things that will be most salient for my students, too––all the tech examples on where and why experimentation is used. I’ve been encouraging my students to use AI tools every step along the way, so we can learn about what’s possible, together.
