But while some folks were obsessing over a report most Americans will never read or care about, Black voters in the South were staring down the possibility of losing voting power for generations. This may not be a priority for some people. But as a Black man from the South, this is about my existence. It’s about the environment in which I’m raising my sons. It’s about whether my children grow up in a state and a country that sees them as equal citizens whose voices matter. This is personal to me. This is about survival. We are months away from what I believe are the most important midterms of my lifetime. The Democratic Party cannot afford distractions, vanity projects, or circular firing squads while the fundamental rights and representation of Black Americans are under attack. History is watching all of us. Release the damn thing after the midterms but before the presidential elections, but in this moment we must FOCUS!

Since you have sent me to Congress, I have written 19 bills that have become law. My GOP opponent doesn't even have a single plan listed on his website. I have always fought for Illinoisans and have the track record to prove it. The difference could not be more obvious.

The beginning of a new school year should be filled with excitement and anticipation. But today, it was marred by yet another act of senseless gun violence. The students, teachers, and community of Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis now share a traumatic experience that has affected far too many Americans. I spoke with Governor Walz this afternoon to share Doug and my grief for the families impacted and our gratitude for the first responders and law enforcement on the scene. Mayor Jacob Frey said it clearly: "Don't just say this is about thoughts and prayers right now. These kids were literally praying." We know the solutions. Our leaders must have the courage to act to stop these tragedies.
