1/ Masochism is a key psychoanalytic concept One form is victim entitlement—insistence one is entitled to special compensation in proportion to suffering & victimhood. Thus the need to *amplify* suffering in all ways Without treatment, suffering/victimhood becomes a way of life

It shouldn’t surprise us that music can help people to feel calmer, reduce experiences of pain, connect to memories etc. because we all have all had these experiences. Otherwise, why would we bother with it? (There are many other reasons too admittedly) 🧵

I would also emphasise that, for #musictherapy, the importance of the relational potential of music at a deep human level is something that we are ‘researching’ all the time in practice. Psychoanalysis is getting interested in music, but…

…as far as I can tell, psychoanalysts have nothing on music therapists when it comes to experience and understanding of how to use music relationally in therapeutic practice. As a profession we can and do own this, and we should be confident about it.
