I have lots of ideas for economics papers I'd like to write but not so much time to write them. So I decided to just post many of them publicly to see if anyone else wants to write them: economistwritingeveryday.com…

This advice for journalists from @TheStalwart is also good for academics

I'm particularly proud that the budget significantly scales back certificate of need laws in Rhode Island. Entirely removes home health, behavioral health services, imaging, ASCs, and more. Raises CapEx threshold to 50M. Streamlines approvals and limits the competitors' veto.

I feel this anti-corruption mood building and I think in the next 3 years we’ll see it start to cause real changes- a ban on Congressional stock trading, or a big increase in white collar prosecutions, or the high water mark of legal sports gambling
One thing I've noticed in @TheArgumentMag's polling: the salience of corruption is going up. In November 2025, corruption was ranked as the 5th most important issue for voters. In May 2026, it was ranked 3rd, ahead of immigration.

Why is US healthcare so expensive? There are many pieces to the answer but I think this (the particular way Medicare was designed in 1965) is the biggest
Why did the cost of American healthcare increase so rapidly? amazon.com/dp/1630695432/ read "The American Way of Welfare" to find out

I'm pleased to announce that today, the @CFTC is officially seeking public comment on a structured framework for evaluating the types of events that may underpin contracts traded on prediction markets. This proposal would give the CFTC durable, transparent rules of the road to identify the contracts Congress directed it to scrutinize while letting legitimate markets move forward pursuant to the public interest.

I usually post about what I know (economics), to relatively little engagement. But clearly the people demand amateur film criticism
Finally watched Margin Call. It's good like everyone says but I'm more impressed that they made a movie with this cast for only $3.5 million

Disappointed by the lack of actual margin calls in the movie though

One way we're back to the '90s tech bubble days: FINRA just repealed day-trading restrictions that had been in place since 2001

This is how you write an opening: "ETHEL, La.—There is a Nile crocodile loose somewhere in central Louisiana. It’s in good company. A private zoo here has also misplaced a Marabou stork, a lynx, two Indian crested porcupines, a family of capybaras, a mob of kangaroos, a flock of flightless Rheas, a herd of water buffalo and an entire safari exhibit of bison, zebras and antelope. Now even the founder wants out." wsj.com/lifestyle/zoo-ethel-…

"Emerging market policymakers whether it be fiscal or monetary have actually been behaving more in a more disciplined fashion than their developed market counterparts. And as a result, emerging market inflation is actually today on average less than developed market inflation."

Incredibly creative work, plus a nice history of economics lesson. It is great to see people taking big swings at vexing theory problems.
Excited to FINALLY release toughest most rewarding paper I've worked on... ….we attack a 150 year old Walras question that's gone unanswered, not for lack of trying (Hicks, Samuelson, Arrow; our chances?😱)... Q: Is the market equilibrium stable or unstable?¯\_(ツ)_/¯ 🧵

AEA meeting is a different object now. Registrations still declining, but more slowly.

On the @MebFaber show, @WGoetzmann says it is still possible to buy shares in the world's oldest joint stock company, Bazacle. But it looks like its successor company, Électricité de France, was re-nationalized in 2023 and no longer trades?
