So proud of this team and the incredible work we're doing to ensure high quality early literacy experiences for our city's youngest learners!
Preschool teachers are engaged in a skyline foundations lesson immersion on rhyming words, focused on bringing their authentic self to facilitation to ensure joy in teaching and joy in learning. Excited for our youngest learners! @ChiPubSchools @CPSCEdoBogdana @CPSLiteracy

New @NCTQ analysis of 693 teacher training programs finds many still promote balanced literacy methods that have kids guess at words rather than sound them out buff.ly/42GLvEt

Did I spend way too much time on this? Yes. Will I do it again if I can get my little hands on some LLI books to continue to prove a point. Also yes. #knowbetterdobetter #leveledreaders #fandp #lli #guidedreadinglevels #scienceofreading #phonics #structuredliteracy

Idk what happened but the @CCSSO standards landing pages I’ve used for 10 years disappeared. I figured if the 1996 Space Jam website was still up, surely these pages would last forever. #ccss #commoncore

In PD about attachment styles and a teacher used a scene from @AbbottElemABC as an example. I want this to happen in every PD for the next decade.

1. Lots in the world feels helpless, but we do know how to teach young children to read. Doing so now is more important than ever, with one-third of our littlest readers lacking fundamental skills, a 20-year low according to one study. nytimes.com/2022/03/08/us/pa…

If we continue to be held hostage by our current systems and structures, we’ll get what we’ve been getting. If we continue to have the same arguments, we’ll keep getting poor outcomes for everyone. We have a chance to do something different. How can we unleash new ideas?

We all want our children to be successful in school. Universal pre-k is the first step to making it happen & the #BuildBackBetter agenda makes sure every child in America can get there.

Roughly 7 mil children in the U.S. receive special education services — or did, until the pandemic. Many of those services stopped when schools shut down. @NPRCoryTurner & @rklein90 highlight the issues with the broader ed system. 📸 by: @ElissaNadworny npr.org/2021/06/16/994587239…

New research from @NORCNews, @UChiConsortium and @StartEarlyorg finds policies that increased access to full-day, pre-k in Chicago created a pathway to higher math test scores and grades for second graders, particularly for high-priority students. bit.ly/3iH5nnE #ece

This article outlines the challenge. I'm thinking a lot about solutions, especially for the rising 2nd & 3rd graders who have had much of their early reading instruction interrupted and/or unconventional. So, here are some ideas... (1/5)
Learning to read can be hard. Learning to read in a pandemic is next level. @Yanazure did a deep dive on an important topic in this @chalkbeatCHI story. chicago.chalkbeat.org/2021/5…

3. Empower families with knowledge about how children learn to read and the most effective strategies to use at home. Bonus points if it comes with decodable readers. Extra bonus points if this lift isn't on teachers alone. (4/5)

4. Prepare now for the potential increase in 3rd-5th graders with unfinished learning re: code knowledge. Be ready w/code-focused interventions. Tentatively plan schedules, staffing, resources, but collect strong data at BOY to confirm need(s). (5/5)

Tier one is the game changer. You can not “intervention” your way out of mediocre/ineffective core instruction. #Tier1magic

Omg this thread! My least fav is objective obsession in PK-1 classrooms. Like, we might be doing something a little diff every 20 min. I’m not posting 20 obj each day. #edchat
Can we talk about this whole "changing the learning objective on the board every day" thing? We know this is a sham that just makes evaluators happy but doesn't help learning, right? Kids can't keep track of what they are learning if they feel like it changes every day. 1/5

The percentage of early childhood educators living below the poverty line is *astonishing.* So is the pay gap between ECE workers w/degrees and K-8 teachers. The turnover rate is so expensive — plus you're driving so many people who love the work out of the profession
