It was a pleasure to attend the @mastscot #MASTSasm2024 in Glasgow last week! 🌊Thoroughly enjoyed presenting my PhD research on killer whale predation in the context of the harbour seal decline, catching up with many a familiar face & making new connections🐋

it's an incredibly sad day today for all of us here and across the marine mammal community worldwide as we say farewell to our beloved Simon Northridge who died suddenly on the 17th April. Simon leaves an amazing legacy of a career dedicated to the conservation of marine mammals

We've been having many conversations about the carbon footprint of travelling to conferences here at SMRU so a group of us decided to cycle to the @eimr2024 conference in Orkney to raise awareness of climate change and raise money for a good cause justgiving.com/crowdfunding/…

Always useful to see pics of our tracked seals! The tag was put on this grey seal pup on the Isle of May in Nov 2023. Tags are glued to fur so fall off when the seal moults. They provide info on survival movements, to inform environmentally sustainable management of our seas
🦭 1/2 This Grey Seal Pup was reported as an entanglement today, as you can see she’s not entangled in rope/net etc but actually has a telemetry tag attached to her for research! The tag is attached temporarily by glue to the seals fur, which detaches when the seals……

The second youngest member of the 65s Northern Isles Community Orca pod born in the winter of 21/22 to pod matriarch '65' aka 'Razor'. Incredible to watch as mother and calf hunted just metres off the rocks at Kirkabister, Shetland. An unforgettable experience.

When Orcas do headstands... Incredible to witness the 65s Orca pod 'reverse fluking' as they hunted in South Nesting Bay, Shetland. We often see 'fluking', but this was on another level! @whalesorg @Seasaver @mcsuk @kasmunro @SaversSea @marcrileydj @SteelySeabirder @kazcustard

To say that we had pretty amazing views of Orcas here in Shetland today is an understatement! Two females from the 65s pod brought their calves in the shallows and started hunting beneath our cliff top vantage point! Here is matriarch '65' aka 'Razor' and her calf born 2021/22.
