Thank you to 🇶🇦 Qatar’s Prime Minister @MBA_AlThani_ for welcoming me to Doha as I continue my important visit to the Gulf at a time of increased concern for nuclear safety across the region. We had an important exchange on the current situation in the region, including non-proliferation in Iran and @IAEAorg’s indispensable role. I reiterated the Agency’s commitment to working with countries across the region to strengthen nuclear safety and security and support stability. At this critical moment, dialogue and diplomacy are the only path forward to peace, stability, and cooperation.

At the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the UAE 🇦🇪, where a drone strike on 17 May highlighted once again why nuclear facilities must never be targeted and why such attacks are completely unacceptable. Thanks to the professionalism and swift action of the @ENEC_UAE and @FANRUAE, the situation was quickly brought under control. The @IAEAorg will continue supporting nuclear safety and security in the UAE and across the region.

Important meeting in Abu Dhabi 🇦🇪 with @mofauae’s @ABZayed. At a time of increased concern for nuclear safety in the region and following the recent attack on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, it was important to be in the UAE and reaffirm the @IAEAorg’s support. The professionalism, transparency and close cooperation shown by the UAE authorities and institutions reflect the highest standards of nuclear safety and security. We also exchanged on the growing role of nuclear energy worldwide, including advanced reactors and SMRs, and their importance for energy security, economic development & emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

Reiterated to the @IAEAorg Board of Governors that nuclear safety is universal. The IAEA’s principles apply to all countries, all facilities, without exception. No double or triple standards when it comes to nuclear safety.

Operating nuclear power plants like Barakah NPP host thousands of kg of nuclear material in the core of the reactors, fresh and spent fuel. A direct hit or the loss of power supplies could have severe consequences for people and the environment.

Timely exchange with @MOFAKuwait’s Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah on the nuclear safety situation in the Gulf, including recent strikes in the area of Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant. I thanked him for his update on the attacks in Kuwait and expressed @IAEAorg’s readiness to continue providing technical assistance and advice on emergency preparedness and response, in the context of the ongoing military conflict and the potential radiological impact of a nuclear emergency on Gulf countries.

The IAEA has been informed by Iran that the Shahid Rezayee Nejad Yellow Cake Production Facility in Yazd province (also known as Ardakan) was attacked today. No increase in off-site radiation levels reported. The IAEA is looking into the report. IAEA Director General @RafaelMGrossi reiterates call for military restraint to avoid any risk of a nuclear accident.

After recent concerning reports about military activity near the operating Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in Iran, IAEA Director General @RafaelMGrossi today had a phone conversation and received an update from Rosatom DG Likhachev. In accordance with the seven indispensable pillars on nuclear safety and security, DG Grossi recalled that no military action should put at risk the physical integrity and safety of NPPs and their operating staff, who must be able to carry out their vital work in safe conditions.

Me reuní con el presidente de Brasil, @LulaOficial, con quien conversé sobre el tratado de Itaipú y la visión política que impulsaremos al respecto para el crecimiento y desarrollo de nuestros países. En ese sentido, junto a nuestras delegaciones analizamos los detalles sobre el precio de la energía y su afectación en el desarrollo de nuestras naciones a corto y largo plazo. También evaluamos la realidad geopolítica mundial y regional, y valoramos al Mercosur como una institución integradora a nivel regional y mundial. Destacamos la importancia de fortalecer los lazos entre nuestros países y, desde ahí, generar vínculos con otras regiones del mundo. Hablamos especialmente sobre la situación en Venezuela y el interés de colaborar en la reconstrucción de la democracia en ese país. Durante el encuentro, el presidente Lula me manifestó su deseo de realizar una visita oficial a Paraguay, e igualmente me extendió una invitación para realizar una visita de Estado a Brasil.
