Grateful to the care and sensitivity of KPBS reporter Tom Fudge @TFudgeSD. He is very much interested in the biology and was able to pack so much in a 2-minute story. Now I know why I have been a fan of PBS. BTW, Hui-Hao Lin is in the job market.
Really enjoyed this one. Protein rich foods act as a sort of “aphrodisiac” (debatable but I only have so many characters here). The paper goes on to show the hormonal and neural pathways involved in this state switch

Just in time for #ValentinesDay, @UCSanDiego scientists have identified a molecule released from the fruit fly gut that switches their focus from eating to courtship. The "Dh31" discovery opens the door to unexplored areas of gut-to-brain communication. go.ucsd.edu/3GRfGhH
Thrilled to share our new work, led by postdoc Hui-Hao Lin #hao, and 5 years in the making. Lin, HH., Kuang, M.C., Hossain, I. et al. A nutrient-specific gut hormone arbitrates between courtship and feeding. Nature (2022). disq.us/t/4522kh9
3. Dh31, a neuropeptide released by the gut in response to amino acids, reaches the brain via the circulatory system.
4. In the brain, Dh31 activates two populations of Dh31 receptor-expressing neurons to terminate feeding and initiate courtship.
Richard Benton is elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. He has pioneered studies of olfaction in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, and other insects, providing insights into how nervous systems develop, function and evolve. #RSFellowsroyalsociety.org/people/rich…
Two-author paper (rare these days) on how hormone regulates learning in an age-dependent manner. Specifically, spontaneous activity in the mushroom body is bad for learning and its suppression by juvenile hormone improves learning in older flies.
Congratulations to Sachin Sethi and Danielle Garshott for receiving the Founding Faculty Awards for Graduate Excellence by UCSD Biology. Sachin was recognized for his PhD work in my lab on how population density regulates social behavior. @sachinsethibiology.ucsd.edu/about/news/…
Millions of Chinese in the USA use the WeChat app to communicate with friends and family back home. Just this week my MiL was hospitalized following complications of surgery. WeChat allowed my DW to talk to her brother & mom through it all. Is this a threat to national security?
Today my lab at @UCSDNeuro opens.. The day started, naturally, with breakfast at Abu Hassan in Yafo.
Things are up and running, remotely for now.
Students at UCSD or prospective students interested in theoretical neuroscience, please get in touch!
Besides the more colourful birds that returned in the last couple of days, the Grackles did not want to be left out of the picture either. Love those eyes!! #Grackles#birdwatching#birdphotography
