Metaverse in NYT (2007): “John Maeda isn't real, nor is the island. He is the Resident, and the island is the Metaverse in the virtual world of the Second Life online game. Other works exhibited are a beige Apple II computer, and a dozen or so iPod Nanos.” nytimes.com/2007/05/04/style…

The future of agentic development isn't chat alone. It's chat and canvas, two hands working together. Canvases are where work takes shape, becomes visible, and gets verified. Neither hand can do the job by itself.

VS Code gives you: 1. SOTA models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Gemini 2. BYOK for any model not natively supported in the product (and works w/o login!) 3. Harness choice with VS Code, Copilot CLI, Copilot cloud agent, and 3p harnesses like Claude/Codex Developer choice ftw!

LOCAL IS THE PAST FUTURE: I remember when personal computers didn't have a network port. To be clear, they had a serial and/or parallel port through which you could connect with some version of another universe outside the PC's motherboard. But in general, anything you did on your PC wasn't going anywhere. Unless you wrote to a disk. And you got up from your desk and “👟sneaker-net” trekked it over to some other computer. Many decades later wanting to create the minimum local-ish web scraper upon which I could use a local LLM to securely work with private information, I give you `localpage` github.com/johnmaeda/js-loca… -- which has been borne from at least fifteen months of wondering how to do this correctly. I mean, the reverse of what we do now of pushing everything everywhere onto the network. You might want to work with info only on your local computer, so I made this app to do just that. I know there’s many slick demonstration apps out there that make your eyes pop out of their sockets for their WTH-ness, but if you’re a simple person like me wanting to take what's in your browser context and work with it locally, then this is the app for you! And if you can improve on it (which is highly likely ;-), I welcome you to do so in the spirit of what my @github colleague @mariorod1 refers to as “the way“ we need to think of building software as a communal act. In the last few weeks I’ve gotten close to the “zen“ of GitHub and have been deeply moved by the idea of how building software and building community must go hand-in-hand. This agentic software development era can feel a bit confusing right now, but what’s not confusing is the strong worldwide community we are all building right now together. ICYMI if you ❤️ the community values of GitHub and have waited for an octocat comeback moment, there’s a new, elegantly simple GitHub Copilot app coming very soon github.blog/changelog/2026-0… It's been made with a lot of human love. I think that matters today. It will matter even more tomorrow. Local = Human. —JM --- Localpage Repo: github.com/johnmaeda/js-loca… GitHub Copilot app: github.blog/changelog/2026-0… Local-First Conf Maggie Appleton's talk: youtu.be/qo5m92-9_QI?si=__k8…

making each neuron in the hopfield network a bird: store a memory and the flock splits/coalesces based on their weight matrix. memory = murmury.

~ memory is a flock of birds ~ i built a hopfield network and taught it the alphabet - then watched it remember in real time by adjusting the temperature. no neuron has the whole picture. the memory is distributed across every neuron’s connections.

More context isn’t always better. @JohnMaeda explains why agentic systems need a “clean molt” trimming unnecessary context to avoid noise, confusion, and degraded results. #CozyAIKitchen episodes: msft.it/6019vH4BR

Here's @johnmaeda's second tip from #SXSW: use a tuned harness to shape how models behave, from prompting to tool calling. Tools like GitHub Copilot CLI make it a lot easier to go from “interesting” to actually useful. #GitHubCopilot SDK: msft.it/6017vEQMf

AX: Design saved the day back in 2010. But this next wave of Agentic Experiences (AX) open.substack.com/pub/useful… will prove to be quite different compared to what gets practiced today. Why do I care? When I was younger, I had the opportunity to meet Clayton Christensen through the now long gone Tribeca Film Festival Disruptor Awards program. I was a big fan of Christensen’s work “The Innovator’s Dilemma,” especially because I was of the age that could remember a company called Kodak that missed the shift to digital photography from pure chemistry. At the time, it felt unimaginable that film negatives would go away. Disruption is an uncomfortable thing to experience. It generally feels desirable to wish the ongoing change to just disappear. Unfortunately that’s not a good strategy to bet on if you aren’t correct. But if you understand how we got here, and you know how to speak machine, then I believe you will have the tools with which to take action. In that spirit, I’m doing a slow-mo version of the report in good ole-fashioned chunks. —JM — Slow motion #DesignInTech: open.substack.com/pub/useful… 50-minute video format: designintech.report
