Redistricting cases are even more difficult to navigate b/c of some recent Supreme Court decisions and require deep expertise. Thankfully LDF has some of the strongest litigators in the country, like Assistant Counsel @johnscusick, fighting for #fairmaps.
"Our clients and the groups that we represent here are looking for a fair process that doesn't decrease their electoral opportunity and does not use race in an impermissible way when sorting voters in and out of the district."
– John Cusick, LDF Assistant Counsel

BREAKING: The Georgia Supreme Court unanimously denies the last-minute effort to reinstate the State Election Board's unlawful rules, including the hand count and certification rules!
"We applaud the judicial decisions blocking the Georgia State Election Board’s unlawful rules, which are inconsistent with Georgia law and would risk disrupting the election administration process."

Mississippi’s 1890 constitution was explicitly racist: it meant to limit Black political power through felony disenfranchisement.
Today the conservative 5th Circuit upheld that Jim Crow-era policy, ensuring many tens of thousands can’t vote in November.

Penal disenfranchisement laws are discriminatory defects in our democracy. They disproportionately harm Black voters & other voters of color, and they are exactly what the Eighth Amendment's prohibition should cover: cruel punishment. Another unfortunate decision. #UnlockTheVote
BREAKING: The full Fifth Circuit, on a 13-6 vote, upholds Mississippi’s lifetime ban on voting by those convicted of any of a number of felonies. A prior three-judge panel had held that the ban violates the 8th Amendment. The full court rejected that. storage.courtlistener.com/re…
ALT IV.
Holding Art. XII, Section 241 of the Mississippi Constitution categorically unconstitutional, even as to a limited set of offenders, is at odds with the Supreme Court's and other courts' decisions, would thwart the ability of the State's legislature and citizens to determine their voting qualifications, and would require federal courts overtly to make legislative choices that, in our federal system, belong at the State level. The district court's judgment denying relief to the Plaintiffs is AFFIRMED.

Breaking news: Crystal Mason, the Texas woman who was sentenced to five years in prison for trying to submit a provisional ballot in 2016 that was rejected, has been acquitted on appeal. Story TK. Background: theguardian.com/us-news/2022…
"They abandoned these traditional redistricting principles that had guided all their work. And you see this tremendous disparity of almost 30,000 Black Charlestonians moved out of Congressional District 1 for no reason." John Cusick, Assistant Counsel, LDF on @rolandsmartin

Our response urging the Court to deny the stay: naacpldf.org/press-release/b…
Civil rights groups filed a brief at SCOTUS yesterday accusing South Carolina Republicans of gaming the system to try and get another election with an illegal congressional district in place. SC says June election is so close it shouldn't have to come up with a new one
Instead of waiting for a decision from the panel, on Monday (3/18), Defendants filed an emergency application for a stay with the Supreme Court, asking to keep in place South Carolina's racially gerrymandered congressional map for the 2024 elections: supremecourt.gov/DocketPDF/2….
