I am pleased that the union has paid tribute to someone I learnt so much from. Neil Sharp was a Sociologist, a Trade Unionist, and someone I will not forget. I am proud to have played a part in pulling together how we have much to learn from his legacy:

There has been wide-ranging public comment and criticism directed at Northumbria University management since it announced its intention to introduce two separate salary scales for staff depending on which pension scheme they choose, with those staff who choose to remain in the Teachers' Pensions Scheme (TPS) being subject to a punitive pay freeze. Northumbria University UCU have resisted these unacceptable proposals at every turn, including through industrial action.

Northumbria management says it needs to cut £25m. But it spent £39.6m on capital projects last year an eightfold increase in four years.
Staff are being asked to pay for that gamble with their pensions.
