It's amazing how many of my friends have their 56th birthday tomorrow, almost as if January 1st 1970 was some kind of special day. Hmmm. If you know why that day is special you really should come to my talk at Everything Open! 2026.everythingopen.au/sched…

I don't often do mechanical CAD, but when I do, I make sure it's in public so everyone can laugh at me youtube.com/live/eF_D3yn9x3E…

We did it! The result is snap-on, snap-off pressure plates that can be easily swapped to suit the job. Magnets FTW

Even by Amazon standards, this is extraordinarily sleazy: starting March 28, each Amazon Echo device will cease processing audio on-device and instead upload all the audio it captures to Amazon's cloud for processing. 1/

I need the dopamine hit of finishing something, ANYTHING, this year! I have a big list of unfinished projects so let's get started. Livestream starting in 5 minutes: grab yourself a coffee and lets GOOOO! youtube.com/live/pjyK3yxQJh0…

It's hard to schedule time for major overhauls of production equipment when clients constantly need PCBs produced, so the Christmas / NY break is about the only chance I get to do it. Time to make a mess! Step 1: Rip out the lighting and paint the ceiling beams

Step 3: Realise the open ends of the beams look awful, so laser-cut some acrylic end caps, fit them, and then paint over them

Step 4: Design stands for the pick-and-place machines to get them up off their trolleys, order steel, and weld them together. Amazingly the result was <1mm of dimensional error in every axis! There's still much to do and it's going to be a stretch to be ready in 7 days :-O

I've finally finished the new #ReflowMasterPro oven calibration & characterisation system for the 3.0 firmware release. Here are some screenshots of the process showing the 50-100C range, but the system also characterises 100-150C and 150-200C. #maker #coding #projects #reflow

My Air Quality Sensor project has been sitting in an incomplete state for several years. Let's see if I can finally bash the design into shape, ready to order PCBs. Live PCB design is the best PCB design, and not scary at all ;-) youtube.com/live/tqSLXBE7Jyg…

Need to test PCBs? I do! So I created Testomatic, and now it's time to bring up the v2.0 hardware for the first time and see if it works. Come along to the next livestream to see if the smoke comes out: youtube.com/live/NKKHU5QBmrw…

The "Testomatic" automatic circuit board tester is ok, but it has shortcomings. So I ripped it all up and started again from scratch, incorporating suggestions from viewers. Time to show progress and see if I'm on the right track now :-) youtube.com/live/gqv1hSj2L1Y…

Inspired by discussion on the last livestream, I'm going to try some stupid stunts with Node-RED to build a user interface for a test jig. Come along to my livestream this morning and see if it works! youtube.com/live/XV_e2hS3-80…

A generous friend gave me a standing desk adapter that sits on a regular desk. It has an oil cylinder and a release lever to allow it to be raised or lowered. I want to see if I can electrify it to make it a bit smoother. First step: cylinder removed, actuator ready to install.

It moves! Yes, that’s an Allen key pushed through the mounting bracket instead of a bolt but I’m too anxious to test it ;-)

It even moves the other way! Unfortunately the actuator has a greater range of motion than the desk can allow so I’m going to have to add a limit switch in at least one direction. I also need to offset the mount point on the far end of the actuator. But for today, I’m happy :-)
