Ok, here we go: Much of my work concerns the history and return of scientific racism. I’ve written extensively about attempts to resurrect the shuffling corpse of race science and eugenics for many years. Bigotry dressed up as biology. 1/n

There's some amazing data hidden away in ONS's user requested data section. Last year they quietly published death data by age, deprivation decile and cause, which means we can look at age patterns in alcohol deaths by IMD, with sadly predictably grim results:

People often think the most important part of science is the statistical analysis. But they’re wrong. The most important part is understanding the data. Who collected it, when, where, why, how, and from whom? Who entered and cleaned it, when, where, why, how, and for whom?

One of the many pernicious effects of this is the creeping caution and ‘but they-ness…’ that means superb scholars are deemed ‘potentially’ risky if they have ‘views’. It’s in the job description to have views, based on discipline. The damage is done. 1 theguardian.com/politics/202…

A huge deal of biomedical science is not replicable, & research waste a serious problem. Science may be self-correcting in the long term, but how long can spurious science persist? In @RSocPublishing Open Science today, I try answer that. Short 🧵 royalsocietypublishing.org/d…
