State governments spent a combined $64 billion on incarceration in 2021. The median state spent $65k per prisoner. Arkansas spent the least, at just under $23k per prisoner, while Massachusetts spent way over the median: $307k per prisoner. Because MA spends so much per prisoner, they also imprison the fewest people, which I think is the correct way of going about prison. It should cost A LOT to imprison someone. That way we try to avoid imprisoning people and instead prevent crime. Universal basic income would mean a lot less crime and a lot lower recidivism.
