Finally had the time to peruse the latest court documents in WP Engine v Automattic. No wonder Matt put that post out.
Automattic is fighting to uphold its clawback of a Slack exchange from July 24, 2024. That's roughly two months before the keynote address at WordCamp US.

if WP Engine gets access to that exchange, and it shows the campaign was premeditated and strategically coordinated rather than principled improvisation, Matt and Automattic's entire narrative defense collapses.
Trying to keep up the David vs. Goliath narrative is all he has now.

He's been ranting about the sad state of WordPress.com too and "led" that right into the ground too. He does not have "product vision" in the slightest. He has "product envy" and there is no little blue pill to fix that.

He has been _every release lead_ since WordPress 5.0 with a few exceptions who were his direct employees. He also has his employees in all key positions. Including marketing and design.
He wants the community to “let” him lead? What exactly has he been doing this whole time?

According to sources @photomatt is a day late celebrating the one year anniversary of laying off 16% of his staff by threatening to layoff 85% of the staff because they haven't done what he told them to do. He's using AI to scour meeting notes, transcripts, even public speeches.

Then he's planning to spin up agents to do the tasks that haven't been done. As someone who regularly pushed back against his asks because they would breach contracts I have to scoff. Maybe your ideas just aren't that good. You know, like the 100 year plan??

Instead of cutting head count, maybe you should take a page from Jensen Huang. Get better ideas. "For companies with imagination, you will do more with more. For companies where the leadership is just out of ideas, they have nothing else to do.

Bombshell news out of the @altctrlorg event alongside #WCEU: FAIR (Federated and Independent Repositories) introduces a #wordpress package manager in an aim to fully decentralize & futureproof WP by insulating the ecosystem from the anti-competitive whims of @photomatt
Backed by the @linuxfoundation and hundreds of contributors the project was coordinated by @jdevalk and @karimmarucchi and has an all-star technical steering committee of @Ipstenu @cdils and @rmccue.
This is a huge step in a great direction #wpdrama #WCEU2025

Many have called for Mullenweg to step down or be removed from the project. That's not going to happen. In what may be the longest con in open source history we've all learned he controls it all. Making him *irrelevant* to the project is the next best thing. #wpdrama #wpterrorism

TIL That Automattic P2 has a neat new feature! Last year they added nearly invisible watermarks which are unique to each employee. Cool, cool, cool. Other collaboration platforms have it. But... they didn't announce it. For a place where communication = oxygen they've become rather oxygen starved. Heads up to any one still there or any journalists who might be talking to folks - don't get anyone fired! #wpdrama #wordpressterrorism #trustnoone

While @photomatt is busy trying to spin that these ~280 lost jobs today because of performance issues... I can tell you that's absolutely true. **His performance/incompetence** The # of brilliant, hard working, and talented people who were kicked to the curb today is staggering.
