The spike in traffic deaths during Covid was because "we took away the congestion, we took away the thing that was stopping people from driving fast ... [without congestion] people drove the speed the system was designed for [and more people died]" - @clmarohn
The REAL Reason Traffic Deaths Are Down youtu.be/yDIjWHxciPo?si=30tv… via @YouTube Are traffic deaths really going down? Also, I’ll bet that injuries have gone up.

The messaging problem from @NHTSAgov is worse than @clmarohn says NHTSA actually says that congestion causes speeding nhtsa.gov/risky-driving/spee… "Traffic congestion is one of the most frequently mentioned contributing factors to aggressive driving, such as speeding" It's nonsense

"drivers’ decisions about speed selection include many instances in which the vehicle’s speeds are constrained by traffic control devices or traffic congestionβ€”instances in which drivers clearly have no opportunity to speed" - somehow also @NHTSAgov rosap.ntl.bts.gov/view/dot/1…

Wish this had talked more (or really at all) about traffic safety Texas has lost at least one person every day on Texas roads since Nov. 7, 2000. #EndTheStreakTX
We’re turning 100β€”episodes, that is! πŸŽ‰ For 75 years, TTI and @TxDOT have partnered to improve transportation safety. In this milestone episode, TxDOT's Marc Williams and TTI's Greg Winfree talk about the impact of this collaboration. |🎧: ow.ly/oKRC50VbmwJ

By my reading, President Trump has ordered the immediate shutdown of all ongoing highway bridge projects in the US, or at least to stop paying states the money they are owed once they build the bridge. Because "disbursements" means outlays and IIJA funds $7.3B/yr for bridges.

Thanks to @SenatorBaldwin for asking @USDOT Secretary nominee Sean Duffy about the Sarah Langenkamp bill in today's confirmation hearing. His reply: β€˜I commit to work with you to make sure our roadways are safer for everyone.' We look forward to seeing this commitment in action.

This March, @BikeLeague will be organizing meetings with members of Congress to advocate for this bill and others that can improve the safety of people who bike You can be part of those meetings Register by January 17th for early bird pricing: bikeleague.org/events/summit…

Automatic braking systems that would better protect cyclists and pedestrians must be mandatory on new vehicles, a Colorado member of Congress said, offering up a new bill that advocates hope will finally protect vulnerable road users from drivers. usa.streetsblog.org/2025/01/…

Speed safety cameras are very common in countries that are successfully reducing #TrafficDeaths using a #SafeSystem Approach Really appreciate this new report by @Visionzeronet and looking forward to their webinar on January 28th visionzeronetwork.org/upcomi…
Scarlet Neath from @policingproject urges communities considering or running speed camera programs to "adopt these recommendations to ensure they are working toward safety on the road for all.” Check out Fair Warnings here: bit.ly/4iuRju5

"I want people to… experience history, to work for their knowledge, to feel the things, smell the smells, feel the environment in the same ways that a lot of the visionaries who built the aqueduct experienced… and it’s my opinion that that is best done on a bicycle" πŸ™Œ
I've been developing the Los Angeles Aqueduct bike route for the past 3 years and finally have released a trailer for a short doc about it. The route was designed for educational and recreation purposes, so people can experience the journey that water takes to get to their tap.

They are actively looking for people to be involved and have monthly meetings Goal is to have a specification later this year This would be a huge help for understanding infrastructure and comparing communities, and making progress

Research from Australia on 30 km/h zones (20 mph) Findings show decreases in vehicle speeds and decreases in serious injuries Didn't find that people will actually go the lower speed limit, but that seems okay to me Safety is the goal, not compliance
