i guess this is kind of where i'm landing on this whole Fable situation.
not really libertarian myself, but...
i agree they can do whatever they want with their models. they have the best model right now, and it makes sense how they're attempting to use it as leverage.
most of the outrage is really frustration and fear. we've gotten used to being able to play with the new toys, and now they're being withheld, monetized, weaponized, and they're attempting to add roadblocks to competition after they've gotten the lead.
it's a good playbook sir.
bigger picture, it was always going to happen. they could open source the full unguarded mythos right now, and it wouldn't matter too much since not many of us have a billion dollar datacenter lying around. technically they dont either (they rent all their hardware). but we've always known the labs would/were keeping the best toys for themselves and their best clients.
we're just bitter. hoped we could pretend for a little longer that the playing field was kinda fair.
and there's some indignation at the shamelessness of it i guess. get a lead, make it insurmountable by any means.
also a little lack of trust in e/acc. we've seen this self-appointed savior story play out, and the only people that enjoy it are the saviors.
