On a day that @JohnsHopkins has reaffirmed its desire to create a private police force, let's revisit the "public safety" data from another university's police force: #NoHopkinsPolice
14 Aug 2020
A few days ago, the University of Chicago, i.e. the president and provost, emailed the campus with a subject mentioning “public safety” The email starts out by calling for an “examination and reflection of law enforcement in our society” 🧵 👇🏾

I'm also calling state senators delegates asking them to support efforts like @jillpcarter and @GabrielAcevero's to revoke state approval of the police force. Find your reps: mdelect.net/ baltimorebrew.com/2021/02/18…

JHU admin said last May that they heard the "urgent calls for reconsideration of the way in which public safety in our community is achieved." Wonder when they decided to stop listening. #NoHopkinsPolice

🚨I wrote about how individualism is still sabotaging the pandemic response, and how it has been accentuated by vaccinations & the CDC’s recent guidance. Our collective problem still exists & has been even more heavily shifted onto the most vulnerable. 1/ theatlantic.com/health/archi…

Globally, we’re facing a severe COVID-19 vaccine shortage. Dose-sparing strategies could save lives. An argument against these strategies is that they might increase vaccine escape. We think these evolutionary impacts deserve a closer look, and could actually go the other way.

Dr Lessler and his team are excellent infectious disease epidemiologists. They’ve run the numbers on schools & show: 1) Transmission is a problem with in-person school, even part-time 2) With careful protection measures, risk can be lowered 3) Many schools aren’t doing enough
In preprint w/ @KateGrabowski @khgrantz @andrewazman @CJEMetcalf @Lizstuartdc we look at #COVID-19 risk to household members from in-person schooling. A summary follows. Caution: this work has not yet been peer reviewed (1/8) medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Are things that academia values, the most important things in modern science? @AdamJKucharski @sbfnk & I argue probably not. I hope this can change: many people are doing valuable technical work & they are - & should be able to stay - a part of science. journals.plos.org/plosbiolog…

A very insightful overview of how mobile phone data can be used to inform the analysis of COVID-19 pandemic epidemiology. Thanks to Amy Wesolowski and the team for including extended coverage of our work! nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

Since #superspreading is evidently a hot topic again (my mother is asking about it) retweeting an explainer thread I put together w/ @khgrantz back in February.
There were some questions about the meaning of our #covid19 analysis of the consistency between lack of observed onward transmission and Wuhan's R0, so @khgrantz and I put together a quick tweet thread to hopefully explain. 1/n

We had two preprints out last week. They might seem unrelated, but have lots to do with each other. In this thread I will outline the results and what they have to do with recent discussions around testing. @JHIDDynamics doi.org/10.1101/2020.09.02.2… doi.org/10.1101/2020.09.01.2… (1/16)

I'm often asked by incoming PhD students how I budget $$$ to make ends meet while on a T32- or NRSA-equivalent salary from the NIH. For 2020/2021, that's $25,320 annually. H/T @EpiHenri for editing & encouraging me to post! 🧵👇🏽 #PhdChat #PhdStudent #AcademicTwitter #YNAB
