Working on my concept circles. This reinforces the concept of proportional reasoning using what is normally thought of as a "ten" as "one" Also, 0.06 challenges students. Can we show 0.06? Why? Why not? What needs to change? Deep thinking indeed!

Today we engaged in #MathPlay by creating faces with a value of 100 and then graphing our rods! I LOVE using relational rods to represent thinking in number and data, helping students develop a deeper understanding. Thanks @kitluce1 for this great idea from @OAMEcounts

Really appreciating the richness of the Divide an Inch task from @OAMEcounts with #MTH1W. My class last year struggled heavily with it. As a result, I was much better prepared to scaffold and consolidate this year and so many good things came out of it! 1/2

Working with integers? Try this shady #yohaku. Fill in cells with 9 different integers to get products shown in each row/column AND sum of 4 shaded cells is 2.
ALT Use 9 different integers in a 3 by 3 grid. The numbers in the top row multiply to 16. The numbers in the middle row multiply to -21. The numbers in the bottom row multiply to 60. The numbers in the left column multiply to 42. The numbers in the middle column multiply to 60. The numbers in the right column multiply to -8. The sum of the integers in the 2 by 2 square at the top left of the grid is 2.

I used to do this activity to help me unlearn using the phrase "Hey Guys" to address the class.
Now we do it for fun.

From our introduction chapter. Remember, every step toward equity eliminates inequity or cultivates equity. By itself celebrating diversity doesn't do either. We should celebrate diversity, but it can't become the high optics, low-impact fill-in for high-impact equity leadership.

The heart of a blue whale, which can weigh in excess of 1,300 lbs (590 kg), is the size of a small car. The gigantic heart beats 8 to 10 times per minute, and each heartbeat can be heard from over 2 miles (3.2 km) away. Their arteries are so large that a full adult-sized human can swim through them.
At birth, a baby blue whale is already 25 ft long (the size of an adult killer whale) and can drink up to 150 gallons (568 liters) of milk a day, gaining as much as 200 lbs (90 kg) per day in its first year. They feed almost exclusively on krill, which are small, shrimp-like invertebrates that are on average only 1 or 2 centimeters long. They eat 4 to 6 tons of krill a day. As adults, they can grow up to 110 ft (33 m) in length and weigh up to 180 tons.
It's fascinating that throughout history, Earth has been home to some of the biggest animals, but the largest one of them all exists in our timeline, swimming in the deep ocean right now.
