1/6 KOOBI IS LIVE! We’re taking on the greatest crises of our time ~ climate change and species extinctions ~ and challenging the carbon offsetting industry to think differently.

The symposium topic is "seeking solutions to the complex problem of land degradation and restoration" from global to local scales, organised by Vanessa Adams, featuring a great line up of Matt Appleby, Natasha Stoudman, and Kerry Brindle
At #ICCB2023 in Kigali next week? Don't miss our symposium on Monday morning at 11:15!
I'm presenting my @McKinsey work on scaling up conservation capacity to a place where countries can achieve 30x30, including real-world examples of success...
Could a conservation basic income help safeguard biodiversity? What would it cost now and under a 30x30 scale up? Our new paper digs into some of these questions... nature.com/articles/s41893-0…
1/n Our new paper explores the role of democratic elections as drivers of pan-tropical deforestation... brilliantly led by @JoeriMorpurgo, it was a real data detective story! sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
New research ~ 45% of the environmental crisis can be solved for a $700b/yr profit!
We redid the planetary boundaries analysis, looked at economoc sector contributions to crossing them, and costed the actions to get back in safe levels

The European Parliament just voted to label fossil gas as “green” energy. This will delay a desperately needed real sustainable transition and deepen our dependency on Russian fuels. The hypocrisy is striking, but unfortunately not surprising.
This is still #NotMyTaxonomy
How much land must we conserve to save wild species?
64 million km2 - 44% of Earth's land - according to new research in @ScienceMagazine by Koobi co-founder @jamesecology
Check out or blog covering this and other key findings...

I gather you enjoyed our paper Martin! ;) I guess i'd add that a paper is more than a map or an analysis. The questions it asks and the discussion it prompts are as important. Methods should be assessed in the context of the aims, where sometimes an overlay works fine...
The data analysis forming the basis of the paper is also the basis of a global Report on "Rights Based Conservation". This report lays down the urgent necessity of shifting to a rights based conservation approach in details rightsandresources.org/publi…@AIPPIKPA@DKaimowitz
A just published study by @jamesecology highlights "44% of terrestrial land must be ecologically sound to prevent major biodiversity losses"

I am a co-author on this new @ScienceMagazine paper led by @jamesecology. It suggests that achieving conservation targets would require action on 44% of the earth’s land. I have been critical of calls for – #30x30, #HalfEarth etc. So why did I join this study? 3 reasons: 🧵
Nearly half of planet’s land in need of ‘conservation attention’ to halt biodiversity crisis

New study finds 44% of world’s land surface needs increased protection, with 1m wildlife species at risk of extinction

"64 million km2 - 44% of Earth's land surface - requires conservation to ensure biodiversity is safe." We need to start doing a lot better and getting this right. #conservation#natureneedsmore
Big thanks in particular go to Scott Atkinson @da_schmins who did all the analytical legwork, and Hugh Possingham @HugePossum and Daniel Kissling who took me on as their postdoc to do this work. It was 4 years in the making so thanks for the support and patience! @IBED_UvA
We are not suggesting this land all needs to be locked up in protected areas - there are many levers we can pull as conservationists (see discussion section) - and we need to use the best one for each local context. The places just need to be managed so biodiversity can persist
1.8 billion people live on the land needing conservation that we mapped. So actions must promote the autonomy and self-determination of people who call the land their home - this requires rights based approaches to conservation @EcocideGenocide@RightsResources@kundan_kumarkun
