I first saw
@MURS perform at a
@rhymesayers @soundset party at
@firstavenue It was my first time out in Minneapolis, my rapper paranoia had put together a conspiracy that
@atmosphere was setting me up for a robbery (he was just so nice and dependable!) and I found my swirling thoughts interrupted by the story being told on stage over some funky bass and a sample that kept saying “Bad Man!”
Fast forward what seems like several lives later (and children for Murs) and I found myself at
@songbyrddc witnessing what is said to be a farewell tour. This time I was there for the whole show, studying the craft of this master for my first time while he gave to a crowd what he said is his last.
We hung out after the show, and between discussions about life, his plans to pour the energy, wisdom, and inspiration he would usually put on a page into his children, prowrestling, and his new book “Tour Story Vol. 1” with
@jay_you I found myself thankful that
@distantdee had been so adamant that we take the trip to DC to see and meet someone who inspires him so much.
The last time Dee and I were in DC was to rock with
@ChinoXL at
@kountfif release party.
#ChinoXL was a MC and instant friend who made such an impression on me that it will last a lifetime. Sadly I will never be able to hug, shake hands, and say thank you to him again until we meet on the other side of this page called life.
On the way up to that show as we listened to
#Murs “Best Rapper In L.A.” podcast, I told myself one day our paths would cross in person instead of in passing or a mutual acquaintances conversation.
Maybe it’s the Californian in me, as I was born in Loma Linda and Murs is from Los Angeles…call it Manifest Destiny. Regardless of which gravitational force brought us together, I’m thankful that it finally did.
As for why I’m holding his book like a hadoken, that night almost 2 years ago in DC, Chino XL demanded I take a picture of him holding my 7inch single the same way. He said:
“When people respect each other they should support each other. We need more of that and should show more of that.”
Much respect to Murs and congratulations on one hell of a Run!
