Thankful for an exciting, empowering two days of professional learning alongside @apsupdate educators 🧑‍🏫. Armed with new understandings about how the science of reading impacts secondary readers, we examined new ELA standards to imagine responsive approaches to complex texts. 📚✔️ @JSerravallo

Middle School ELA! @CatoosaSchools Teachers were in the midst of a dystopian short stories unit 😳 focusing on identifying theme. We chose not to replace original texts w/ abridged versions, but instead offered supportive and scaffolded oral readings of complex texts to tee up complex thinking. We gave readers copies of short texts 📖, and took away the 💻 to support deep comprehension 🧠. Teachers could quickly peer into student thinking via stop and jots 🗒️ and planned instructional next steps! @JSerravallo

The researchers estimated: If a student spends 10 hours reading in print in their free time, their ability to comprehend will likely be six to eight times higher than if they read on digital devices for the same amount of time. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.… (6/8)

My six year old is LOVING the newest pigeon book!
If I don't get to drive the sleigh, I plan to be quite scrooge-y.

Another fascinating conversation! This time @TimRasinski1 and @JSerravallo cover fluency, teacher agency and best practices. Their talk reminds us to lean on our most current reading model and shows how kids could have JOYful interactions with text! ❤️

I ❤️ summer PD! W/o the hustle and bustle of the school year, teachers can slow down, reflect and (re)imagine next year's curriculum. A lot of discussion and data diving led to smart, engaging, jointly created writing units to kick off the next school year! @JSerravallo
