Germany's coming to the fore in European defenses- that was the leitmotif of our conversation with @MunSecConf's Head of Research @TobiasBunde, as the @GSSC_LT launches a series of high-profile debates on Berlin's (ever-increasing_ role in Europe -and beyond.
Germany’s decisions today have long-term significance for the security of NATO’s eastern flank. GSSC hosted the first event in the “Vilnius-Berlin Pulse” series, dedicated to Germany’s foreign, security and defence policy. The discussion featured @TobiasBunde, Director of Research and Policy at the Munich Security Conference. The event was moderated by @Leskevicius, GSSC Chief Adviser on Foreign Policy. The discussion addressed Germany’s changing strategic thinking, the transformation of the Bundeswehr, the deployment of the German brigade in Lithuania, transatlantic relations and challenges within NATO. Germany has spent more than 15 years outsourcing its security to the United States so it could focus on its economy. Yet, its average growth rate has been just 1.34% per year.

If hope for Iranian 🇮🇷 regime change remains, the United States 🇺🇸 should rank its preferences like this: 1. Secular democracy 2. Secular autocracy 3. Islamist theocracy 4. Civil war Iran remains at preference number 3... lseideas.medium.com/regime-c…

Germany and Lithuania should build a deep and broad partnership; the German brigade provides an opportunity for both countries.
🇱🇹 Lithuania wants to make German more popular in schools and universities 🇩🇪 Plans include more students choosing German as a first or second foreign language, stronger German studies in universities and even the possibility of a German-language school.

Finland, with a long border with Russia, understands the value of Nato and transatlantic relations better than some Western European countries. Finnish president @stubb immediately moves into crisis management mode and calls Trump.
Spoke with @realDonaldTrump @POTUS. Constructive discussion and exchange of ideas on Nato, Ukraine and Iran. Problems are there to be solved, pragmatically.

As long as European NATO cannot defend itself against Russia, it is very unwise to flatly reject European contributions to keep Hormuz open. Germany can perhaps afford to do so, but not Poland, Finland, and the Baltic States. Security-dependent allies need to find something

Not everything in the Arctic is about Greenland. Read my latest report on Russia’s growing interest in Svalbard 👇
Russia’s most important naval stronghold sits in Murmansk, which makes nearby Svalbard strategically sensitive. GIS expert Henrik Larsen @larsenification explains why hybrid pressure around the archipelago will likely continue. Read the full report here: gisreportsonline.com/r/russi…

Is Svalbard quietly becoming a testing ground for Russian hybrid operations? According to Henrik Larsen @larsenification, fishing vessels, research missions and satellite infrastructure may serve a much broader strategic purpose. 👉 Read the full report: gisreportsonline.com/r/russi…

🌐 Everyone is watching Greenland. But what if the real strategic pressure point in the Arctic is somewhere else? GIS expert Henrik Larsen @larsenification argues that Svalbard may be far more important for Russia’s military thinking than many realize. Read the full report here: gisreportsonline.com/r/russi…

How many divisions does the EU have?
I will convene an extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council via video link on Sunday to address Iran and the rapidly unfolding events across the Middle East. I have been in contact with our partners in the Gulf countries. The Iranian regime’s indiscriminate attacks against its neighbours carry the risk of dragging the region into a broader war and we condemn this. It is essential that the war does not spread any further. The Iranian regime has choices to make.

Former and ex-someones are highly untrustworthy when it comes to so crucial questions of war and peace
Former NATO SecGen Rasmussen says it clearly: Europe must deploy to western 🇺🇦 now. At least 20,000 troops and 150 aircraft. Create a safe zone to protect civilians. Not "next year", not when it's convenient. Now! Send a message to Moscow and Washington, a message to the world

In Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979), the People’s Front of Judea demanded the dismantling of the entire Roman Empire within two days
The EU's External Action Service has issued a discussion paper on the concessions Russia should make to get peace, and it is nothing short of delusional. It stipulates Russia's surrender, disarmament, rollback of alliances and external oversight over Russian domestic politics.⬇️
