This is such a tragedy! This is why we shouldn't let corporations do libraries' job.

People should be able to read without fear of corporate surveillance. That's why libraries need to OWN digital books - not just license them from corporate publishers and lend them via corporate platforms change.org/p/let-readers-rea… #LetReadersRead #OwnBooks

We'd point you to 1984 as a cautionary tale about lack of #accesstoinformation - but we've had to remove it from our lending library due to the publishers' lawsuit 🧐 #LetReadersRead change.org/p/let-readers-rea…

Incredible thread!
Tomorrow, @InternetArchive will file their reply brief in the suit from major publishers to end the right of IA and all libraries to own and preserve spyware-free digital books. Reading what they’re replying to, we’ve gotta ask: Who is the real "Napster" here? A thread.

At the Internet Archive, this is how we digitize a book. We do this so that everyone, everywhere has access to a great research library. #digitization #preservation #access

I co-authored an article for the American Historical Review (published by Oxford University Press). In the grand tradition of scholarly publishing, I was paid $0 to produce it, but I still feel pretty cool. Ping me for the free-access link! doi.org/10.1093/ahr/rhad528

"Public domain" means public domain. Anyone can do anything with our files, without our permission. Many of us would rather not be used to train AI, but they're not doing anything illegal.

@librivox @LibriVoxateers LibriVox readers: did you know your voices were used to train AI speech for Microsoft’s Vall-E, which used Meta’s audio library Librilight, and drew from Librivox narration? 60k hours of narration from 7k readers. Did anyone ask for your permission?

it would be good if we could all pay a little attention to the hachette v. internet archive lawsuit, which is crucial for continued existence of libraries' ability to lend digital content. the court ruled against the internet archive, who is now trying to appeal that decision
