Quoted in this @FT piece on Australian international education reforms, making the very obvious (but apparently, not obvious) point that Australia should be careful to protect the soft power asset that is our ability to attract international students. ft.com/content/f93b251d-e282…

hey if you’re confused about what’s happening in Indonesia, here’s an explanation: there’s a Javanese ritual called ruwatan in which someone’s name is changed due to their actions, and the Indo president’s name is now officially Mulyono Nipunegoro Nitiputro or Raja Jawa for short

My intention was to do an explainer for non-chronically Indonesia pol-obsessed people, but I'm not sure I've hit that tone exactly. This is huge and like all Schrodinger's Constitutional Crises, a difficult one to parse for casual observers: darimulut.beehiiv.com/p/indo…

Sorry correction - the MK decision was to change the threshold for votes gained in an election by pol parties (10-6.5% depending on the population of the region). So if a party got this % of votes they can nominate a candidate. This is down from 25%

Correction/clarification (contd) the parliamentary threshold was 20% of seats in order to nominate a candidate for pilakada - the MK decision got rid of this, putting in place minimum thresholds based on the number of *votes* received i.e. no more threshold based on seats in DPRD
