Coalition of African National medical Association (CANMA). CANMA ELECTIONS The Coalition of African National Medical Associations (CANMA) yesterday afternoon formalized its existence after a ten year journey. The CANMA dream started in 2016 with efforts by leaders interacting at the World Medical Association - WMA activities and noting that the African voice was scattered and quiet. Operationalization of CANMA was one of the goals of the current WMA President Jackie Kitulu. From 2016 going forwards the Africa national medical association teams were actively activating and reactivating the Coalition. Drs Kitulu Osahon Enabulele, Kigondu, Lyndah Kemunto, Ekwaro A. Obuku, Mvuyisi Mzukwa and others pushed the initial lids. In Helsinki Finland on the sidelines of the WMA an interim team of Kenya, Rwanda, Ghana and Zambia Medical associations was tasked with operationalizing elections for CANMA. I chaired the committee. The Electrol structures were put in place. In Porto again on the sidelines of the @medwma meeting an interim CANMA Board was set up with Mvuyisi of SAMA as Chair, Kigondu of KMA as Secretary and Kaumba Roy Tolopu of Zambia as Treasurer. Yesterday, at the South African Medical Association (SAMA) Summit, a team was formally elected to continue the efforts to unite the African voice. President - SAMA - Mvuyisi Mzukwa Secretary - ZMA - Masiku M Phiri Treasurer - UMA - Frank Asiimwe Vice President East - @KenyaMedics_KMA @IbrahimMatende Vice President South - Namibia Medical Society - Ruben Kanime Vice President West - To be elected Vice President North - To be elected. Finish the PhD. Not because it's enjoyable. But because that degree will actually matter. You sacrificed for it. You struggled for it. You earned every bit of it. Quick achievements fade. The brutal ones reshape who you are. That's why it counts. Not because of the letters behind your name.

The strength that Dr. Chris Obwaka, son of Dr. Job Obwaka, had on this day was immense. He had his fatherโ€™s medicine at hand, yet the authorities holding them at the Milimani Courts parking area refused to allow him to even speak to his father or give him his medication. With the help of SC @NelsonHavi, @ckanjama, @OmbetaC, and others, they allowed me to examine him. Mzee was not in good health. Eventually, Chris was allowed to bring the medication to his father. He had missed his heart medicine. After giving Mzee his medication, we advised that we further examine him because he was not looking good. The authorities were still adamant. The only recourse was to call an ambulance with an emergency doctor to manage him at the parking area. One of the investigating officers whispered to me that, had the ambulance not been called in the glaring presence of the media and the public, their instructions were to keep him in the police vehicle at the discretion of the powerful man calling the shots. By 1 pm, despite having been within the precincts of the court, no charge sheet had been presented to the Honourable Magistrate. A defaulting charge sheet was later presented, which, of course, contained fictitious claims against Daktari, including allegations that he had not filed returns for Nairobi Hospital in the year 2024. We left the court at 5 pm that evening. I do NOT know how this regime will beat these allegations.
Last month, on 16th when Dr. Obwaka was released after his abductions over Nairobi hospital.

Africa has tripled its health workforce in a decade. Yet a shortage of 6.1 million health workers is still projected by 2030. At #WHSNairobi2026, leaders came together to discuss how to align training with real health needs, recognise qualifications across borders, and retain the health workers Africa has worked so hard to train. @novonordiskfond @who

Seven months since launch, the Inter-County MPDSR Initiative is already demonstrating strong progress. I commend counties for prioritizing maternal and newborn health, and appreciate the Gates Foundation for its continued catalytic support. Our focus now must be on: โœ…Strengthening nationalโ€“county coordination under CoG leadership โœ…Institutionalizing accountability to ensure recommendations translate into action โœ…Leveraging data for timely, informed decision-making โœ…Investing in sustainable, County-led solutions @KenyaGovernors in partnership with the @gatesfoundation and other key sector players, we will strengthen county capacity through training, mentorship, and knowledge-sharing platforms; roll out an MPDSR tracker; and convene an MPDSR Conference to bring all stakeholders together. We must sustain momentum, deepen collaboration, and ensure every intervention counts toward saving lives.
