Ian Fleming's original James Bond novels haven't aged well. For example, Moonraker - published almost exactly 70 years ago in April 1955 - features a villain who's a super-rich industrialist and rocket-maker seeking to cause chaos because he's a secret Nazi. Such a silly idea!

my mom (who's a university professor) did something interesting last year: she assigned her students to give chatgpt an essay question, have it write a paper, and then proofread/fact check it. nearly every single student in that class came out of that assignment anti-chatgpt.
how it feels to be a university student who's anti-chatgpt

Possible G4 magnetic storm arriving Thursday. Chance for Western Washington to see the aurora Thursday evening/early Friday morning. Looks like the weather will cooperate with mostly clear skies. #wawx

#GopherConSG will be postponed to 22-24 January 2025, so we can have more time to plan and put together a great conference for everyone. Because of this, we're extending our #CFP for a few more days, in case you might have some #golang ideas to share! 💥 papercall.io/gopherconsg-202…

We have the worst traffic on the 401 and no one just thought, “how about we put a rail line here?”

My life got a bit better WRT video games when I started simply adding games to my Steam wishlist instead of buying them for the backlog. Now, if only I had time to play more...

Thanks everyone for sending along photos so far! There is also a full moon tonight, so the best potential to see the northern lights will be away from city lights, and through camera & phone photos. Also dependent on how long geomagnetic storm conditions continue.

Potential to see the northern lights over portions of Western Washington exists tonight. We do have some high clouds overhead this evening, with low clouds increasing along the coast & moving into Puget Sound early Tues. However, there will be clear skies at times! #WAwx

This was so fascinating. I had a teflon knitting needle on @ISS and charged it by rubbing with my Russian fur boots. Then I directed water droplets from a syringe towards the charged knitting needle and this is the resulting dynamics. The droplets, due to charge forces, go into a crazy orbit around the knitting needle. If planets were cylindrical this would be the orbit of its moons due to gravity. I think people really don't appreciate just how incomplete Linux kernel API docs are, and how Rust solves the problem. I wrote a pile of Rust abstractions for various subsystems. For practically every single one, I had to read the C source code to understand how to use its API.
