Today is Blood Donor Day and whilst many people understand the role blood donors can have in saving human lives, few realise that equine lives are also saved by blood donors! Although there is no national blood bank for horses, the Royal Veterinary College keep horses who
perform a vital role donating blood and plasma for medical treatment. Horses have many different blood groups but in an emergency where there isn't time to cross match, the group AQ negative provides life-saving support for a seriously ill horse.
The family were given some new track space (and hence fresh grass) and were very pleased about it, galloping around gleefully.
Here's Jay J mid celebration - and nearly airborne!
Perfect timing for the photo!
We are very sorry for the worm involved, but these photos really do show how clever the robin has to be to get the food - plus we know he has a new family in a nest in our barn and has a huge responsibility on his shoulders to feed them.
Chickens have better hearing than humans! They have ears on both sides of their heads, just behind and below the eyes. Instead of ear flaps, they have a special feather (auricular) protecting the ear canal whilst allowing sound to pass through. 1/2
Sensory hair cells in the ear converts sound vibrations into electrical signals for the brain which process quicker than humans, allowing the chicken to detect the direction and distance of sounds accurately ensuring rapid response to any potential threat!
Weβre delighted that Guildbury's Theatre Company has chosen Mane Chance Sanctuary as the charity to benefit from their upcoming outdoor production of The Crucible at Merrist Wood.
Our volunteers will be serving refreshments in the tea tent, with all proceeds helping to support our work with rescue horses and ponies.
If you enjoy great theatre, why not come along and support two local causes at the same time?

As well as the five domains of animal welfare, we believe in the 3 Fs - Friends, Forage and Freedom. Horses are highly social prey animals meaning that socialisation with other horses is a vital part of their day-to-day life.
Living in herds, our horses at Mane Chance build social bonds through mutual grooming, playing and resting with each other. Not to mention lifelong friendships and simply being a best pal to lean on! Perfect for today as it's Best Friends Day!
How lovely to learn that the Bank of England is going to be celebrating UK wildlife on banknotes in the future. Which of our native creatures would you like to see appear? You have a shortlist to choose from but it's still a really hard decision... 1/2
