Am on a @SW_Help train back from London and am as usual surrounded by people loudly discussing how they didn't have to buy a ticket. But not loudly enough to wake the guard who is gently snoozing at the back of the carriage.

on @British_Airways flight, trying to use their free executive club wifi. Requires login, try web and requires completing a captcha which doesn't display on phone. If you try app it locks you out and sends an email to unlock - which requires non-free wifi 😐

This is a very unusual tagging of me where it actually intends to refer to me, not to top entertainer Mark Watson currently appearing at the Edinburgh Fringe (tickets available). Thanks to @glawton of @diginomica for a very enjoyable chat about engineering productivity and AI.
How can we improve developer productivity? @glawton speaks to @ComplyAdvantage CTO @markwatson, who shares best practices, and how they shape his thinking about new AI-powered development tools. bit.ly/3YyIEPD

Looking at the news today (or trying to: in many cases it's down) I'm reminded of a panel I was on many years ago with Bill Coleman (the B in BEA) who said re Microsoft: "never trust a vendor you wouldn't trust to run your pacemaker. four words: blue face of death"

Many people have been (rightly) worried for a long time about monolithic dependencies on monolithic tech providers. If you want a great perspective on/extrapolation of it go read @doctorow's brilliant short story, "Unauthorized Bread" from his book Radicalized

Labour is on track to win the biggest majority of any party in a century as the Conservatives haemorrhage more support to the Liberal Democrats and Reform, a major poll has found ⬇️ thetimes.com/uk/politics/art…

Sums up current state of UK that in the last 5 days we had 0 visits from our postman but 2 from our desperate but frustratingly unrepentant brexiteer MP, hoping to intercept our postal votes. Which arrived this morning along with a week's worth of mail (and sorry Ranil but no)

So I'm in a business meeting in Sydney Australia today and the person I'm meeting says "I was looking forward to this because you have the same name as my favourite comedian, you know, THE Mark Watson". Cue argument about his use of the definite article @watsoncomedian <= your fault.

I could wish nothing better for them than for them to be surrounded by cheerful quintuplets.
Is this the future you want for your daughters and granddaughters? 😡

I think you'll find those aren't the groups Conservative governments are historically known for "appeasing"
Liz Truss, "For years and years and years, going back two decades, Conservatives have not taken on left wing extremists" #PopCons "They don't admit they're socialists or communists any more, they say they're environmentalists. "They say they are in favour of helping people across all communities" "They are in favour of supporting LGBT people. Or groups of ethnic minorities" "That is what their ideology is about" "Conservatives ty to appease these people"

The bad news: British Army down to a single platoon. The good news: they're Ultramarines
So how much do you think Games Workshop paid The People Newspaper for the Whirlwind advertisement #WarhammerCommunity

Sigh. A brilliant writer. I started with Fugue for a Darkening Island and read them all. Loved The Affirmation most, I think. It's as though a star has burned out.

Sunak's not even PM by "will of the people", only by virtue of parliamentary process. As part of that same process the pipsqueak has no rights to suborn the House of Lords.
Rishi Sunak tells peers they would be frustrating “the will of the people” if they block the Rwanda Bill - sounds familiar…

I like Farke but I also liked Christiansen. And it feels like that's the place we've found our way back to #lufc

Chaos at #lutonairport, who have chosen today to "upgrade" some tech. @wizzair wrote to passengers advising them to get here 3 hours before flight. So I dutifully got up at 3 to do the 1 hour drive round M25. Flight now 3 hours late (this is only the latest). Congrats.

In a characteristically surprising move, Bielsa calls up wantaway striker Vladimir Putin to the Uruguayan national squad #lufc
Russian media: "The source says there is panic in the Kremlin, no one can reach Putin" "Source: Right now the Kremlin is negotiating about something with general governor Dyumin" Source: Some people in the Kremlin, from the presidential administration, are finding out about a possible emergency relocation. One of the few available destinations is Uruguay".

The movie the guy sits down to watch is Ridley Scott's upcoming Napoleon (due November). Test screenings report the film is 150 mins long. The battery life on the new device is 120 mins. I predict this will do well in France.
