Settela Steinbach | Died Auschwitz-Birkenau, 31 July 1944
1934 – 1944
Settela was 9 years old, born 23 December 1934 in Buchten, Netherlands. A Sinti girl from a Dutch Romani family.
On 19 May 1944 she was filmed peeking from a cattle car door at Westerbork transit camp — the famous 7-second clip of "the girl with the headscarf." For 50 years she was thought to be Jewish.
Deported that day with 578 Roma and Sinti to Auschwitz-Birkenau. She was murdered in the gas chambers with her mother, two brothers, two sisters, aunt, and cousins. Only her father survived.
We remember Settela Steinbach. A child of the Porajmos.

8 June 1929 | A Dutch Jewish girl, Anna Bannet, was born in Rotterdam. She was arrested while trying to get to Switzerland.
She was deported from Drancy to #Auschwitz on 23 June 1943. She did not survive.
