Today, Professor Georgia Perakis of @MITSloan announced a new department at @INFORMS's flagship journal, Manufacturing and Service Operations Management Journal (M&SOM): "AI in Operations." @maxccohen (@mcgillu) and I are honored to serve as the founding Department Editors starting January 2026. As Georgia put it, “AI has been rapidly evolving and is changing the field of Operations. Its impact is touching numerous Operations applications, ranging from healthcare to supply chains and more. One can argue the applications of AI arise, and can arise, in practically every area.” And the department seeks to “help our community showcase and be an outlet for all the important work our community does in this area.” In this new department, Maxime and I hope to spark and catalyze high-impact work on AI in operations, work that advances theory, empirics, behavioral foundations, and computational approaches, especially research that engages with generative and agentic AI. Georgia, thank you for your leadership, and for giving our community a new home for this work. This is our moonshot. This is our wheelhouse. We’re in a golden age of Operations.
