Creating energy planning solutions with open source software and open data | Steering OET and PyPSA meets Earth | Macro-energy system modelling | PhD⚡️
🚀 Open-source tools are becoming a powerful advantage for energy project developers.
An Indian 🇮🇳 developer recently used #PyPSA to design 24/7 carbon-free energy (CFE) power purchase agreements (PPAs) for renewable and storage projects and is super happy!
At @Eurelectric's conference in Helsinki last week, discussions highlighted how open energy models can provide a shared analytical foundation for planning future electricity systems. Do you agree?
Thank you to the organizers!

🚨Many grids are not properly mapped. Missing lines, missing easy to find metadata etc. If we close the data gap, people can better perform policy and climate resilience studies, among others.
Check out grid inspector for #open grid data quality mapyourgrid.org/gridinspecto… & support our #MapYourGrid initiative mapyourgrid.org to fix those grid data gaps.
👀 doesn’t look like it, but China’s grid is one that would require some mapping attention. Stunning grid! ✨
My favourite open energy modelling course with interactive notebooks: fneum.github.io/data-science…
Lecturers can copy, extend and share this course too. We wrote some instructions here: open-energy-transition.githu…
What’s cool with that one is that students don’t need to install anything
Plenty of other free and excellent energy modelling courses are listed here: forum.openmod.org/t/getting-…

A NEW TWIST in Africa's soaring solar story:
It's now manufacturing its own panels. The factories use imported Chinese cells, which are 40% of the value of panels, keeping much of the value domestically.
9 GW of cells wafers in Mar/Apr alone🧵
Can Europe modernise grid planning with transparent, reproducible tools? Our latest Open-TYNDP release shows #OpenSource#PyPSA model can support TSO-level transmission planning with comparable results and more transparency for policy&investment decisions: open-tyndp.openenergytransit…
Many #opensource models use such open grid data for policy studies, technology assessments, decarbonisation studies etc
