This Ross is phenomenal, such mastery. I’ve read it maybe 50 times, taught it, and it still surprises me.
In 1995, Lillian Ross observed, with an anthropologist’s eye, the rituals of private-school teens on the Upper East Side. nyer.cm/La2I510

Jesus H. Christ. The first paragraph of this is like a horror movie. I have no idea how Pamela Paul went on to have two more kids. This is what happens when a relied-upon right looks poised to disappear: writers appear with flaming swords
The @nytimes’s Pamela Paul with an incredible, vivid, potent, and powerful reminder to all of us that haven’t given birth that we have no idea what it’s like and it’s disgustingly offensive to say women w/no access to abortion should ā€œjust have the baby.ā€ nytimes.com/2022/06/19/opini…

Shotguns, by law, need to have a max capacity of 3 shells (with some exceptions), and it makes sense because if you haven’t hit what you’re shooting at in 3 shots, you’ve missed it. Go for it Congresswoman Spanberger, this is a good angle.
When I began as a federal agent, I carried a gun and two extra magazines every day. My mags were marked ā€œfor law enforcement use onlyā€ because they held more than 10 rounds. At that time, federal law limited magazine capacity to 10 rounds outside of law enforcement use. (1/3)

As we enter G&T season, most folks who think about these things favor 1:2 gin to tonic. I, however, think it’s best in a double old fashioned glass (as long as there’s room for ice) at abt 1:1, with a quarter lime, not just a little wheel on the rim. (Apropos @surlygourmand.)

Richard Howard once wrote, all caps, ā€œBRILLIANTā€ in the margin of a paper I wrote for him. And honestly I have held that close. Like I can still see it.

I’m going to dig up my notebooks. He was tremendous fun, though I think he pissed people off. He would dead eye you for a cool five count if you raised your hand in class. God help you if you walked in late. RH stopped speaking and watched you until you were seated.

I think he was as close as I ever got to my platonic ideal (as learned in Paper Chase, I guess) of what school was supposed to be. (Mildly abusive, rigorous, and triumphant.)

Angel’s Share changed my life and the way I thought. I’ve had so much fun, so many friendships, and 15 odd years of work because I once asked for a Sazerac at Angel’s Share and the bartender asked which rye I preferred.
šŸ•ÆYou will be missed by many, Angel’s Share šŸ’” RIP to one of the legendary cornerstones of NYC cocktail culture. A toast to you, along with a 21-Gun Salute..heart is heavy tonight āœØšŸ‘¼šŸ»šŸøšŸ‘¼šŸ»āœØ grubstreet.com/2022/03/angel…

Great piece by @kittenwithawhip about Travis @dash37board27. I can’t wait to get down to Bristol!
I'm so grateful to @dash37board27 for being vulnerable, smart, and so fiercely proud of where he's from, and sharing it with me for @foodandwine. (Plus he makes a great playlist.) foodandwine.com/chefs/travis…
