The Trump administration and Elon Musk’s DOGE team cut funding for the USAID Global Health Security (GHS) Program that monitored and contained New World screwworm in Central America.
This cut was part of slashing over 5,300 foreign aid programs. It happened shortly before the administration resumed Mexican cattle imports.
Without that extra overseas monitoring, the flesh-eating parasite advanced north and has now reached Texas cattle for the first time since the 1960s. Ranchers and consumers will pay the price with higher costs and damaged herds.
